What is the purpose of the role?
In this essential role, you will be the company's expert on waste management and will work with the Environment Agency, operational teams and our contractors to ensure full compliance with waste management regulations and environmental permit requirements. Compliance with legislation and permits is a key part of our environmental management system which provides confidence to our customers, stakeholders and board members that we are actively working to reduce pollution and be legally compliant.

This is an opportunity to join our dedicated team of technical specialists who provide advice and guidance to multiple teams across our business to ensure the statutory requirements of environmental permitting and other relevant environmental regulations are understood and met. You will be a key member of this team focusing on waste management, where attention to detail and specialist understanding is vital to promote awareness and respond to any unique challenges. It offers the opportunity of working at technical, operational and senior levels, as well as with our regulators on a site specific basis.
What will this role involve?
Keep up to date on changes in waste management legislation and interpret the impact on the company's assets.
Prepare responses to regulators as appropriate Maintain the legal register with respect to waste management and communicate the requirements to front line operational teams in a way that relates to their activity.
Work with the environmental permitting delivery manager to embed requirements into site operating manuals.
Compile company waste management returns, ensuring data capture and records are complete, timely and accurate Monitor the company's adherence to waste management regulations, including leading the annual self-certification process for waste management.
Define technical requirement for audit for your area of expertise.
Undertake site audits as required, aimed at identifying risks prior to them being identified by external audits Work with operational teams and contractors to put in place action plans to address issues and risks.
Work with the training team to develop appropriate training materials for site managers and operators.
Provide ad-hoc technical advice on waste and contaminated land regulatory issues such as the waste disposal process for redundant assets/sites, support for potential or actual compliance issues and contracts management.
What are we looking for?
Do you have a technical understanding of what constitutes waste? Do you possess detailed knowledge of waste management regulations and contaminated land regulatory issues as they relate to a water utility? Do you have a strong desire to do the right thing? If so, this may be the ideal role for you.To be successful in this role, you will have a minimum of 5 years' experience in a waste management role and ideally an appropriate professional membership. Knowledge of sewage treatment works process and incineration/pyrolysis as well as the ability to interpret complex legislation and articulate it in a simple way both verbally and in writing is required for the essential role. We are looking for someone who is a team player, resilient and confident as you will be working with regulators, operators and contractors. Contracts management experience would be an advantage. Due to the nature of the role, a full driving licence is required. You will be required to travel to operational sites within the Thames valley region.

This role will be based at Clearwater Court, Reading. We are offering a salary of up to £43,000.00, depending on skills and experience.
