What is the purpose of the role?

You will lead, support and develop a team of ICA (Instrument, Control and Automation) technicians. You will also have a wide variety of management responsibility, including: health and safety, process optimisation and budget management. The purpose of the ICA technician is to inspect, maintain, test or repair as appropriate, SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) and associated PLC's, instrumentation, control and automation equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Developing the ICA team in North East London and strategic development of ICA across production with the other ICA managers.

What makes this role unique?

Due to the high profile nature of managing the production and transmission of water across a number of sites, an element of the role will be interacting with many key internal and external stakeholders. The area has over 50 sites including pumping stations, reservoirs and a variety of water treatment works. You will be responsible for the team's health and safety, training and development, financial control and overall performance.

What will this role involve?

Process Management: Developing the team to complete local projects rather than contracting out. Ensuring the team is involved in large capital projects. Ensuring the site achieves and maintains its required plant availability and reliability in order to meet quality targets at the agreed cost.

Financial Management: Owning and managing the budgetary and financial activities of the team and driving efficiencies into the overall operational budget.

Performance Management: Ensuring the team achieve optimal performance in terms of work management, developing the team and introducing new skills including health and safety awareness.

Customer and Stakeholder Management: Ensuring an exceptional service to our customers with early personal interventions as required.

Health and Safety: Effectively manage the health and safety of the team as well as auditing the health and safety system and processes.

Learning and Development: Working with the other ICA managers to ensure technical training is available for the team their own development and to expand the breadth of skills of individuals across the team. Continually improve the performance, standards and capability of the team to meet today's needs, and develop for tomorrow.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who has been working within a similar working environment, has previously had the health and safety responsibility for individuals and sites and also managed a team within an operational function alongside this. Despite not being required to complete the work of an ICA technician, ICA experience is essential to understand the needs of your team. The ideal candidate will have the ability to read P&IDs and understand PLC code. We are looking for someone with understanding of calibration and maintenance of front line instrumentation; with a good understanding of relay logic and PLCs which will include the management and programming of them. Experience with a switch network, SCADA and profibus would also be advantageous. Excellent IT skills and a technical bias are essential, ideally also having working knowledge of SAP. The ability to lead and develop people is a crucial skill in this role so you must have good communication, interpersonal and organisation skills. Ideally you will have gained your experience within the water industry or utilities sector however, this is not essential as training will be provided.

This role is based at Coppermills Water Treatment Works, Walthamstow. We are offering a salary of between £42,075 and £56,925, depending on skills and experience.
