Technical Director - Environmental & Social Impact Assessment Lead, Scotland & Northern England, UK

Office Location: UK

Salary: Competitive salary, comprehensive benefits inc pension, BUPA, car allowance, agile/flexible working

Discipline team: Environmental & Social Impact Assessment

Job Description

SLR is seeking to appoint a leader for its ESIA team in Scotland and the North of England who will join our senior management team in the region. This is an exciting role and would suit someone ambitious who is eager to take their next step in management and progress upwards through one of only a handful of pure- play global environmental consultancies. The successful candidate will be a good communicator with a desire to help their team progress with their own career development and love their jobs. They will be passionate about the environment and will have a desire to drive SLR’s ESIA offering on to the next level strengthening our name in the region and developing our client base.
The successful candidate should hold a relevant EIA or planning related degree or post-graduate qualification, along with a sound knowledge of the planning system and the EIA process. The successful candidate will have excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills and should be able to demonstrate a strong track record of project management and delivery of ESIA projects, along with team supervision and coordination experience gained within a consultancy or similar commercial context.

SLR is a truly multinational consultancy and offers significant potential for career development and enhancement based on performance. Our “one team” culture, flat management structure and straightforward approach to project and budget management gives everyone the opportunity to progress; and to work on interesting projects with valued clients. We strive to ensure that opportunities both for new starters and for existing staff are open to all, and we have family friendly policies aimed at helping staff balance the needs of professional and family life. These include remote working facilities, as well as the potential for part time, job share and other flexible working arrangements. Our staff also enjoy Agile working, which allows them to tailor hours around core hours that will allow them to maximise their work life balance.

Along with a competitive basic salary, the successful candidate will receive a comprehensive benefits package including 25 days annual leave (excluding public holidays); flexible working arrangements; car allowance; private health cover; death-in-service cover; professional membership subscription; and pension.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will have responsibility for the management of a team of eight ESIA project managers who are based across four local offices: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle and Stirling.

A large proportion of the work in this region is centred on clients working in the power, waste management and minerals & mining sectors. The ideal candidate will be an experienced ESIA manager with experience of these sectors who can help to grow our ESIA offering together with providing leadership to the team. We have seen significant growth in these sectors in recent years and so are looking for someone who can maintain this by playing a key role in our regional business development strategy whilst ensuring the team deliver high quality support to our existing clients and stay at the forefront of best practice in the industry.

The successful candidate will also perform the role of Project Director providing leadership and support to a range of ESIA projects and planning applications. This aspect of the work will also involve maintaining regular dialogue with our topic lead specialists in areas such as ecology or hydrology and senior level client contacts.

The role will involve regular short term travel throughout the UK, to both client/project sites and to other SLR offices

PERSON SPEC – SUMMARY

Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
• Strong leadership skills.
• Good connections with industry in Scotland and north of England, ideally renewables, waste management and mining & minerals sectors.
• Planning or EIA related degree such as project management or management qualification.
• Strong organisational, communication and interpersonal skills.
• Full driving licence.

APPLICATIONS

SLR Consulting is an equal opportunities employer but our expectations go beyond just complying with legislation. It is SLR's intention that active steps are undertaken to ensure that opportunities are open to all and that as a business, we continue to strive to promote diversity and inclusion and reduce the gender pay gap.
