Sustainability Consultant / Senior Sustainability Consultant - Leeds

Engineer a sustainable future

We believe that radical ideas are needed to help reimagine the future of our built environment. A future characterised by planetary and fair human wellbeing. We must realise this at a time of unprecedented change, complexity and intensity. This brings great challenge, but also great opportunity.

These exciting new roles within the UK Sustainability and Physics team have been developed to meet the growing demands for strategic and technical sustainability consultancy at a policy, corporate and built environment level.

Buro Happold’s Sustainability and Physics team is made up of engineers and practitioners with varied backgrounds and experiences. We are deliberately diverse and collaborative, united by the common purpose of engaging with these challenges and opportunities.

Our team has worked with some of the world’s most innovative clients and on the most sustainable and iconic projects, from the Eden Project (Cornwall, UK) to Dubai Expo 2020 Sustainability Pavilion (UAE) through to Government strategy and working with corporate entities such as Marks & Spencer and Argent Related. Our current portfolio of work includes providing bespoke sustainability and wellbeing guidance, zero carbon strategies, climate emergency plans, impact assessment and data collection etc. at the civic and corporate policy level, for master planning, building design and operations within the UK, Europe and across the World.

Our team is expanding due to the development of strong relationships, an excellent reputation and a shift in emphasis within the market to demand more consulting input; based on robust technical knowledge and analysis.

Be Challenged

With us, your preconceptions will be tested, your resilience built, and your career enriched.

Sustainability Consultants work across a broad range of consulting projects in the UK and internationally. The work delivered by the team relies on broad holistic and integrated thinking combined with strong and grounded knowledge around the built environment - underpinned by data, experience and informed analysis.

Depending on your experience and skillset, you will sit within one or two streams of our sustainability capability, however our approach acknowledges that supporting these streams often requires holistic and context-aware consideration of various factors, drawing on support from services around the following streams:

* Energy and Carbon

* Building Performance

* Natural Capital

* Climate Resilience

* External Environments

* Health and Wellbeing

* Social Value

* Circular Economy

To help continue driving our offer to the next level we require ambitious and enterprising consultants with a focus on applying their skills on strategic corporate and masterplanning projects. The consultant is not expected to be an expert but will have strong passion, a broad interest and some specialist skills that complement the current team balance.

You will be expected to work as part of a close-knit team under the guidance of our senior staff while supporting the development of graduates and leading defined scopes of work and bids.

The Buro Happold Sustainability and Physics team is constantly developing and uses project-based and academic research to investigate and apply new concepts to promote healthy sustainable development. All employees are expected to engage in this innovation. Potential areas for future research include: understanding the efficacy of alternative approaches, using emerging digital and automated technologies to collect and analyse primary and secondary data, development of corporate and government policies/regulations, high-level and specialised modelling, utilising recognised systems approaches, etc.

Your day to day responsibilities will be extremely varied and diverse, however your primary focus areas will include the following;

* Exuding passion and enthusiasm for the built environment to support human outcomes and fair distribution of value

* Sustainability project and service support

* Task leadership and direction / mentorship of more junior team members

* Production of technical guidance and analysis to influence policy, corporate strategies and urban planning.

* Providing written comments and producing reports and presentations with excellent visual and grammatical quality.

* Working as part of multidisciplinary teams (including, but not limited to attending meetings with architects, planners, government agencies and clients)

* Formulating external presentations for outreach and business development purposes.
