Combining of Surveying and Pway Technical Engineering delivery duties for the SC and PL track renewals work bank. Your primary role will be undertaking topographical surveys of future sites and collation of any other needed information. In conjunction with the delivery of the surveying work bank, assist the Technical Pway Engineering Team in the delivery of track renewals. This involvement can be within all stage stages of a job, be it planning the construction methodology, creating the necessary technical documentation, delivery of the renewal working alongside the Lead Engineer on site and contributing to the hand back and close of job through completion of the Health and Safety file.

Safe delivery remains paramount for all duties as well as consideration of timeliness and budget control through seizing the opportunity to maximize access and opportunity for surveying and technical tasks.


Work as directed by the Delivery Manager and Lead Engineer.

Ensure proposed surveying and construction plans are safe, cost effective and achievable.

Assist the Technical and Lead Engineers in improving productivity and introducing innovation.

Complete and deliver topographic, overhead line and gauging surveys.

Competent in the operation the following survey equipment: Total Station, Platform Gauge, Laser Sweep, GPS, Heights and Staggers Gauge, Mephisto, Automatic and Digital Levels, Laser Scanner, GEDO Trolley and Amber Trolley.

Competent in the following survey software packages, which are applicable to the delivery team you are working in Terramodel, Leica GEO Office, Clear Route, Bentley Rail Track, LSS, Liscad, Trimble Business Centre, N4CE, Auto CAD, Microstation and MX Rail.

Competent in the following survey techniques Traversing, Levelling, Topographical and detailing surveying, Levelling, Gauging, Hallade and GPS GNSS operation.

Carry out risk assessments as part of survey, design and construction work.

Carry out analysis, prepare plans, programmes, detailed site, track, topographical surveys, review or check Particular Specifications, designs or estimates, undertake detailed planning, site visits and progress work as directed.

Assist Construction Manager and Lead Engineer to produce planning documents, multi discipline Work Package Plans and Task Briefs.

Have an understating of CRT management with the objective to be become fully competent to manage a site's CRT.

Discuss all construction and constructability issues with the construction team possess.

Ensure all survey equipment is correctly calibrated and working.

Perform and control all on site technical activities and quality control, such as surveying, setting out and establishing monitoring regimes.

Ensure liaison with other disciplines.

Ensure development of Junior Engineers Apprentices in surveying.

Follow all safety critical processes such as ground disturbance, permit to dig, As builts, CRT, track commissioning, etc

Refer any Design issues to the Lead Engineer CRE.

Refer non-compliances to the standards and all technical issues to the Lead Engineer CRE.

Ensure timely production and communication of reports, including the submission of technical documents for the Health and Safety file.

Attend planning, progress and technical meetings as directed.

Attend engineering and technical briefing as directed.

Attend at all training and induction courses as directed.

Assist in audits as directed.

Cover weekend night duties as per roster.

Ensure all foreseeable risks are identified and suitably mitigated.

Ensure all survey and construction work is delivered to the required quality and on-site quality checks are carried out.

Work towards becoming fully competent in all technical duties on site including all aspects of laser controlled digs, construction tamping, stressing and track commissioning in providing the information to support the speed raiser in their track assessments.

Control all on site technical activities and quality control during surveying and all stages of a track renewal.

Ensure site reporting is completed satisfactorily.

Achieve zero technical non-compliances and corrective actions under external technical audit.

Maintain a register of calibrated equipment and suitable quarantine process.

Prepare plans programmes, detailed site track topographical surveys, As built diagrams, dig sheets, stressing diagrams, review or check Particular Specification, designs or estimates, site visits and progress work as directed.

Undertake or manage safety critical or safety of the line activities.

Identify foreseeable risks related to survey, design, construction and maintenance of the infrastructure.

Ensure that risks are identified at the surveying stages and designed out where possible and that remaining risks are adequately mitigated and communicated to the construction team.

Participate in regular monthly safety meetings with Delivery Manager Construction Manager Lead Engineer.

Report all accidents, and incidents.

As this post has no direct reports, you are responsible for ensuring that:

You do not instruct others to undertake such work if they do not hold the appropriate Certificate of Competence/Authority to Work

As you will expect the organisation may change from time to time and you will be expected to meet the operational requirements.

Any other reasonable duties as required from time to time.

Education to HNC HND in Civil Engineering or equivalent suitable experience

Comprehensive understanding of permanent way and related engineering principles, including interfaces between disciplines

Good knowledge and understanding of track standards, processes and procedures

Computer literacy

Safety Management training

Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation relevant to Construction and Engineering

Must be able to drive
