Substation Construction Manager

Salary: £32,000 - £49,000 depending on skills and experience + car/cash allowance + annual bonus

What is the Role?

SSEN Transmission is currently recruiting for an experienced Site Construction Manager to ensure site activities that you are responsible for are carried out safely, in accordance with programme and to the desired quality. This role will initially be in the Aberdeenshire area and will involve Management of the Principal Contractor as they undertake civil works initially with mechanical/electrical installation and commissioning to follow.

Civil Works on this particular site will include; bulk earthworks (including material processing), establishing drainage systems, casting of building and switchgear foundations, erection and cladding of a steel frame building, casting of oil containment bunds, and establishing substation (bound) roads.

Electrical and Mechanical installation and commissioning on this particular site will include; Air Insulated Switchgear, Gas Insulated Switchgear, Supergrid Transformers, Protection & Control Panels, cross site multicore cables & fibre optics, an IEC61850 Substation Control System, existing asset demolition adjacent to live circuits, and HV Cabling (275kV and 33kV).

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Represent the business during the construction phase and ensure the project is executed in accordance with relevant requirements, particularly relating to statutory and legal obligations, Health and Safety, Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, Quality & technical compliance, personnel and industrial relations.

2. Work closely with the appointed contractor and the operations team to ensure the works are delivered in accordance with the project programme, in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

3. Ensure site activities comply with planning consents and SHE legislation.

4. Develop effective relationships with contractors, suppliers and the community.

5. Ensure routine reports and KPI's are submitted as directed by the Project Manager.

What do I need?

To be considered for the opportunity of Substation Construction Manager you should have the following:

1. A full, current, driving licence as there will be travel involved.

2. An ability to demonstrate experience, and a working knowledge, of applicable health and safety legislation and CDM 2015 Regulations - ideally within a substation construction environment.

3. Experience of working with multiple Contractors/Sub Contractors to drive construction activities to time and budget.

4. Previous supervisory or management experience and an understanding of quality requirements and experience in monitoring inspection and test plans.

5. Strong communication skills and be confident in challenging others, as such experience of resolving conflicts and planning site activities is essential.

About the Department

We are part of Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, operating as Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission plc under licence and are responsible for maintaining and investing in the electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland.

We take the electricity generated from onshore windfarms, hydro power stations and other generators and transport it at high voltage and extra high voltage over long distances through our transmission network to areas of demand around our towns and cities.

Our operating area is home to vast renewable energy resources and this is being exploited by wind, hydro and marine generation. Working closely with National Grid, the GB transmission System Operator, we also enable these electricity generators to connect to the transmission system by providing their connections and allowing the electricity generated by them to be transported to areas of demand across the country.
