Salary: £53,300 - £79,900, plus car/allowance, bonus, depending on experience

About the Department

Operations are responsible for keeping the lights on; we are at the front line on the Network. If we find a fault, it is our responsibility to respond to the fault, and dispatch our skilled teams to fix it as quickly as possible. We work in all hours, and through all weathers, ensuring our customers are never without power.

What is the Role?

The Strategy Manager will have responsibility for defining the business strategy of key operational areas, developing strategic plans, defining and leading performance improvement initiatives and instilling lean improvement culture across operations.

Strategy Development: mobilise and lead cross functional teams (including operations, asset management, etc.), synthesize information, analyse data (i.e. competitors’ data, innovation trends, etc.), engage with senior stakeholders and be responsible for developing the strategy for key operational areas aiming to achieve ‘upper quartile’ performance.

Strategic Planning: translate the defined strategy into actionable and quantifiable plans spanning short, medium and long term horizons, develop respective KPIs and ensure successful embedment of strategy into operational departments, tasked with delivery. The candidate will be involved in the budgeting process, ensuring benefit realisation cascades into annual budgets.

Leading Change: lead cross functional teams in defining, designing and delivering performance improvement initiatives stemming from strategic priorities and business needs and be responsible for embedding change within Operations. They will be responsible for the planning, resource and risk management, reporting and will be acting as lead change agent driving change.

Lean Improvement Culture: oversee the portfolio of Lean activity across Operations, co-lead the lean improvement forum identifying and prioritising focus areas and resources, ensure sufficient lean capability exists within Operations, role model the required behaviours and ensure lean improvement culture is embedded and exhibited across operations.

You will use your analytical skills and commercial acumen to understand and challenge the status quo, develop business cases, define business strategies, plan and lead initiatives that would provide benefits to the organisation. You will use your advanced people management and stakeholder engagement skills to be inclusive and diverse in your approach and secure buy in from senior stakeholders. With an ability to deliver within challenging timescales, to effectively prioritise, plan and organise, balance immediate and long-term business priorities, you will thrive under pressure.

What do I need?

The ideal candidate for this role will have led the development of business strategies and strategic plans in a utility/ engineering environment which have enhanced the competitive advantage of organisations have achieved top market performance. You will possess detailed understanding of asset management processes, investment management principles, operational delivery strategies, change embedment principles and how all components interact to develop a successful business strategy which can be implemented.

You will have managed Lean improvement projects and programmes in a utility/engineering environment, and you will have significant experience in the delivery of operational and behavioural change, strategic business improvement and transformation. It would be highly beneficial if you have led a portfolio of improvement activities undertaken by cross functional teams.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are vital, and you will need to engage and build rapport with senior stakeholders, both internal and external.

Excellent analytical skills are also vital, as you will need to analyse and synthesise raw data from various sources and translate them into actionable strategies.

A project management qualification and a Lean certification would highly advantageous.

It is a requirement for this role that you have a full, current driving licence.
