Reporting to the Technical Design team lead
The Solutions Architect role sits within IT Services, reporting into the Solutions Architecture manager. The role is responsible for defining and recommending solutions that align with the wider ITS architecture strategy and specifying at a Solutions level the appropriate designs to enable successful implementations.
Primary responsibilities include:
Technical lead within a variety of projects
Production of high level design artefacts
Development of /input into low level design technology blueprints to support the implementation of a designated solution
A point of escalation within the team and to the Architecture Manager
Alignment of solutions with ITS technology standards and governance process
Involvement in the gathering of functional requirements for new services, enhancement and/or upgrade projects
The technical authority for the specific area of technology within a project delivery
Overall accountability at a technical level that solutions meet associated business objectives
Acting in an advisor capacity to the Engineering team during the delivery of projects and solutions
Advising and participating where and when required in Architectural activities to develop and define the future IT roadmaps.
Representing the UK on the relevant Technical Information Group(s) (TIG) where appropriate
When necessary deputise for the Solutions Architecture manager, assist in the management of team resources and responds to any escalations and conflicts
Responsible for product selection, where appropriate, and to maintaining technical relationships with vendors and suppliers
Responsible for mentoring team members, providing guidance and technical expertise
The Solution Architect is responsible for the scoping and design of technology solutions, translating non-functional and functional requirements to systems/technical solutions.
Working alongside the Programme and Project Managers and directly with the Engineering team members the Solutions Architect role will be the technical lead driving the technical delivery of a specific aspect of the project portfolio.
They will be responsible for the overall project design evolving the initial high level designs artefact into detailed low level blueprints (working/advising others in some cases) which will support the overall implementation. The job holder will maintain involvement in the project lifecycle through deployment, evolving the design to support configuration and build activities performed by the relevant Engineering teams.
The Solutions Architect will also have responsibility for influencing product strategy for IT Services and will ensure that solution proposals support both the wider enterprise architecture/technology strategy and the operational capability of the organisation, whilst adhering to the agreed technical standards and overall technical roadmap.
- Participate in business engagement activities for analysis and requirements gathering
- Articulate current practice and capability in consultation with clients
- Produce High Level design documents to support initial negotiation of design with clients and operational stakeholders
- Produce /input into Detailed design documents in support of the development of configuration and build documentation
- Influence the overall product strategy, ensuring early operational ownership and capability development for new demand
- Determine/advise on the training needs of operational staff for proposed solutions
- Act as a consultant to the client on technical specifications for custom development and systems integration requirements
- Evolve designs, where appropriate, into repeatable solutions (patterns)
- Identify and develop practice for early stage concept build and prototyping
- Participate and lead, when needed, technical aspects of project meetings with the client
- Input into the Enterprise Architecture and Technology Roadmap
- Provide development support for junior members of the team and across the ITS department
- Seek out opportunities to improve operational efficiencies and process improvements exposing bad behaviours where encountered;
- Cost effective and commercial awareness for the recommendations made / designs provided;
Must be a team player supporting one another in every aspect of the role
Ability to identify problems and requests from ambiguous or unclear communications
Know when to escalate issues accompanied with solution options
Resilience with high focus on ‘getting things done’
High energy, flourishes in fast paced, dynamic environments
Interest in technology trends and their business applications
Interest in the firm and the overarching strategies at play
Willingness to learn new tools, techniques and skills and willingness to share knowledge of and coach colleagues in the use of tools, techniques and skills
Must have experience in at least one or many of the below technologies:
- General Mobile technologies (MDM / MAM)
- Experience with Mobile Iron and Intune
- Mobile Application design
- Good iOS knowledge with an understanding of Andriod operating systems
- Single sign-on technologies (ADFS, SAML, Oauth, OpenID
- AzureAD and O365 knowledge
- Azure Application Proxy
- Database technologies
- Web server technologies
- Secuirty technologies
- Brokered IntegrationWill come to the table with suggested improvements based on factual evidence
Demonstrates a real desire to complete and finish activities not leaving anything ‘incomplete’ and to a high standard.
Ability to report at senior level across multiple processes and management across a large and complex IT enterprise
Ability to develop and leverage strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Decision maker able to act on own initiative seeking guidance as/when appropriate
Ability to work under pressure when dealing with a high volume of change
Experienced in a broad range of technology
