These exciting new roles within the UK Sustainability and Physics team have been developed to meet the growing demands for strategic and technical sustainability consultancy at a policy, corporate and built environment level.

Buro Happold’s Sustainability and Physics team is made up of engineers and practitioners with varied backgrounds and experiences. We are deliberately diverse and collaborative, united by the common purpose of engaging with these challenges and opportunities.

Our team has worked with some of the world's most innovative clients and on the most sustainable and iconic projects, from the Eden Project (Cornwall, UK) to Dubai Expo 2020 Sustainability Pavilion (UAE) through to Government strategy and working with corporate entities such as Selfridges and Marks and Spencer.

Due to the development of strong relationships, an excellent reputation and a shift in emphasis within the market to provide more robust tools and processes in an increasingly data-rich environment., we are expanding the team to include more computational skills. We don’t want someone to be marginalized as behind-the-scenes programmer, but one who can integrate within a diverse range of projects and effectively communicate with others of all backgrounds and specialities.

More about the role...

We are looking for someone with a keen interest in the more computational aspects of engineering, with experience in the areas such as data-mining, warehousing, engineering and visualisations. Ideally the candidate should possess a strong appreciation of applied data-science in a multidisciplinary environment, where application of computational engineering both supports and leads developments.

The work delivered by the team relies on broad holistic and integrated thinking combined with strong and grounded knowledge - underpinned by data, experience and informed analysis.

To help continue driving our offer to the next level we require ambitious and enterprising individuals with a focus on applying their skills on field specific, and generalisable problems. This person is not expected to be an expert in every field but will have a broad interest and some specialist skills that complement the current team balance.

You will be expected to work as part of a close-knit team under the guidance of our senior staff, utilising all technologies available to support, push and enable the engineering of innovative solutions, while supporting the development of graduates and leading defined scopes of work and bids.

The Buro Happold Sustainability and Physics team is constantly developing and uses project-based and academic research to investigate and apply new concepts to promote sustainable development. All employees are expected to engage in this innovation. Potential areas for future research may include the streamlining of multi-process & multi-stakeholder workflows, exposition of calculations via web-apps and automating the management, cleaning and visualisation of datasets.

About you…

Essential Functions

* Supporting the sustainable design and development of industry-leading engineering projects

* Undertaking ad-hoc analysis and presenting results in a clear manner

* Automating complex workflows, linking disjointed software’s, systems and processes

* Steering involvement and recognition of computational engineering within an applied construction engineering environment

* Working alongside and existing codebase to push forward capabilities and provide usable tools both internally and externally

* Increasing the visibility and understandability of outputs through data visualisation

* Developing good quality code, capable of being reviewed and re-used

* Exploring unfamiliar subjects, with an ability to outline and deliver effective means of overcoming a wide variety of problems

Required skills

* Ability to communicate in an effective and confident manner

* Ability to manage tasks and projects successfully

* Technical competence with multiple programming/scripting languages, such as Python, C# and JavaScript and familiarity with common mark-up languages

* Fluency with common data-science libraries such as NumPy and Pandas, and visualisation using Matplotlib

* Familiarity with version control systems, such as GitHub and feature-branch workflows

* Ability to adapt to unfamiliar languages, and not afraid to delve into something unknown!

Desirable skills

* Experience sourcing datasets, data-munging and creating order from chaos!

* Experience with NoSQL databases, including their creation, migration and querying

* Containerisation using Docker for scalable recreation of multi-stage processes

* Management of scalable processes in cloud-based platforms (we use Azure)

* Experience producing cross-platform code and familiarity with Unix systems

* Ability to accept a high degree of responsibility in a team-based organization, combined with ability to work independently

* Strong facilitation and team working skills and a drive to deliver outstanding results

* Experience using visual programming interfaces

Qualifications and experience

* Degree qualified in a computer science, mathematical or science-based subject

* 2 years' experience in a transferrable Graduate position
