Description of the job

A vacancy for a Software Engineer has arisen within Airbus Defence & Space in Portsmouth. The successful applicant will join the Modem Centre of Excellence (COE) within our Secure Communications group.

The Software Engineer will support the development of new features and performances with in a up-to-date, state-of-the-art Software Defined Radio. While this role will be initially focussed upon use within a single satellite communications system, it is the intent that the techniques and technology that are developed will be reused to create a product that can be sold in multiple systems. Because of this, the role has long-term stability and will be to central to a key product-line providing state-of-the-art products to the market, this provides scope for building a fulfilling career with many options and scope for additional responsibilities and promotions through the life of the programme and products.

The successful applicant will need to be eligible to gain UK SC Security Clearance to undertake the role.

Tasks & accountabilities

The Modem Software Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing and testing the software elements of a communication product in response to requirements set by the systems team. This will involve creating a technical response to system requirements, supporting the integration of this product into and systems and learning new tools and techniques.

In order to support these activities the modem group requires a highly competent software engineer with expertise focussed on embedded software or a willingness to learn this skill.

It is expected that there will be considerable learning during the course of the project and product, so the candidate must be open to learning new skills and applying new techniques. The team has a long tradition of supporting the development of its team members, fully involving them in the development of the products and this is reflected by our very high engagement scores.

Required skills

We are looking for applicants with the following skills and experience:

* Experience of C & C++, UML, Linux OS (FC, SUSE, Montivista),
* Experience of development for real-time embedded systems,
* Some appreciation or experience in the development of Modem Products and/or solutions for Software Defined Radio platforms;
* Some familiarity of Waveform Technologies including knowledge of commercially available products and best practice methodologies;


* Desirable to posses knowledge and application of SysML, DSP, Enterprise Architect, Clearcase, Clearquest, QAC+, Eclipse, GNU toolset
* Knowledge of Satcom communications products and services, as well as networking fundamentals.
* Must have the ability to work independently and be an effective contributor in a diversified team
* Must demonstrate creative problem solving skills.
