MySQL Server Engineering is an international team with two main hubs in Bangalore (India) and Trondheim (Norway), in addition to a large number of engineers all over the world. We're currently looking for passionate and skilled software engineers to join our Runtime Team, with special focus on the Oracle managed MySQL Database Service, working from of the Oracle offices in Trondheim (Norway).

As a software engineer on the MySQL Runtime Team you'll be using your expertise in software development, and leveraging the teams's expertise in the MySQL Database product into the best user experience in the Managed MySQL Database Service in the Oracle Cloud. You'll be involved in all parts of development from idea and design to implementation, testing and operations, working with an international team of highly skilled software engineers to add new features, improve the user experience, and make MySQL Database Service the best choice for hosting MySQL databases.

Oracle has invested significantly in the future of MySQL. This investment continues with new features into the MySQL product, and during the last years Oracle has also invested in making MySQL available in the cloud as MySQL Database Service. This is built on the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) which has had a major regional rollout all over the world. As part of this team, you will learn and use the capabilities of OCI, and help to see how to use OCI to leverage the capabilities of MySQL DBMS. You will have unique possibilities to influence the user experience for MySQL Database Service.

Specific responsibilities

* Design and implement new features in MySQL Database Service, the managed database service by Oracle

* Participate in design and code reviews

* Take part in planning processes for upcoming versions

* Contribute to technical discussions and decision making in the team and with other development teams

Desired skills and experience

* MSc or BSc in Computer Science or related field (PhD a plus)

* Good understanding of algorithms and data structures

* Good understanding of DBMS architecture or experience developing infrastructure with DBMS as a key component

* 3+ years of experience with software development in Java or C++

* Enjoy learning new things

* Have a passion for programming

* Self-driven and the able to take the initiative

* Experience with some of the tools we use: Java, C++, Python, Maven, Git, Jira, Bitbucket

* Strong problem-solving and debugging skills

* Ability to work in a geographically distributed team across multiple time zones

* Strong verbal and written communication skills

* Ability to learn new technology and concepts quickly

* Attention to details and focus on quality

* Empathy for the user and interest in creating a good user experience

Design, develop, troubleshoot and debug software programs for databases, applications, tools, networks etc.

As a member of the software engineering division, you will assist in defining and developing software for tasks associated with the developing, debugging or designing of software applications or operating systems. Provide technical leadership to other software developers. Specify, design and implement modest changes to existing software architecture to meet changing needs.

Duties and tasks are varied and complex needing independent judgment. Fully competent in own area of expertise. May have project lead role and or supervise lower level personnel. BS or MS degree or equivalent experience relevant to functional area. 4 years of software engineering or related experience.

As part of Oracle's employment process candidates will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment screening process. This will involve identity and employment verification, professional references, education verification and professional qualifications and memberships (if applicable).
