Job Summary

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Structural Engineer (Principal depending on experience) to join our Exeter Structures team. This particular opportunity has arisen in our Building & Places Business Unit which focusses on projects within the Built Environment.

Our recently refurbished offices are located in Pynes Hill, Exeter, with good local bus, rail links and cycle links. The offices are a short distance from the M5 for easy access by car with onsite parking available.

The newly refurbished office space holds around 100 technical staff from various sectors including Water, Transport, Geotechnical and Buildings. The Buildings team consists of around 30 staff including building services, civil and structural, quantity surveyors and project management teams who predominantly work together on local multi-discipline projects. We are now looking to enhance and grow the structures team with individuals with a sound technical background and who share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.

The structures team workload ranges from feasibility studies to scheme designs, detailed designs, assessments, inspections and construction support on a wide range of building developments principally in the commercial, health and education sectors.

A list of some of the current projects which the Exeter office is working on includes:

Project North Park – The development of a new statement faculty building for the University of Exeter on the Streatham campus. The building includes new teaching, research and office spaces to accommodate various institutes and is currently at feasibility stage.

Northgate, Bridgwater – New cinema, restaurant and leisure complex in Bridgewater, Somerset. Development includes the design of the new buildings as well as associated car parking and infrastructure.

Bournemouth Gateway Building – New 7 storey statement faculty building for Bournemouth University. The Development includes new teaching, research and office space for Bournemouth Heath and Social Sciences and is currently under construction.

Newton Abbot Redevelopment – The redevelopment of the pedestrianised shopping precinct in the town centre which includes the refurbishment of the shop fronts and the construction of a glazed trussed canopy to cover the boulevard.

East Devon District Council HQ – New offices for East Devon District Council, Honiton. Development includes new office space and associated carpark and infrastructure.

As a Senior Structural Engineer you will have the following daily responsibilities:


Delivering structural engineering services on building projects, performing analyses and calculations as appropriate and preparing designs with minimal supervision.


Preparing technical specifications.


Assist in the effective health and safety management of the team.


Assist with the commercial and financial control of your projects.


Inspection and assessment of building structures and other structures.


Contribute to business development.


Supervising work by graduate engineers and technicians, ensuring that it is carried out to the appropriate technical standard.


Report writing and production of technical reports and documents.

Minimum Requirements


Ability to deliver design solutions, assessment calculations, lead teams and successfully manage project tasks


A solid track record of having worked on a variety of building structures projects, as project task or project leader on some, with experience of dealing directly with clients


A highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills


Must be Chartered with the IStructE or ICE


A strong background in software analysis and a high level of technical skills. Knowledge of SCIA Engineer and Teklar Structural Designer software packages would be beneficial


You will have a current driving license and will be willing to travel to visit sites


Good knowledge of the Eurocode Standards

Preferred Qualifications

* ​A graduate in Structural Engineering or equivalent with experience of Structural Engineering in directly relevant fields.
