We are looking for an enthusiastic structural engineer to join our building engineering practice in Solihull to work on a wide range of projects. You will be joining a thriving group of multi-discipline engineers with a strong portfolio of both UK and international projects. The Midlands team is consists of circa 90 engineers in Solihull and 40 engineers in our Nottingham office. The Solihull office plans to migrate to Birmingham City Centre in 2023.
Based in the Midlands, our Building Engineering group is undergoing significant growth and development as it continues to win major work in many sectors including residential, sports, industrial, education and commercial. Some of the projects we have either currently completed or working on are the development of Paradise Circus in Birmingham, the redevelopment of the Grand Hotel, Birmingham; Birmingham University’s new Library, Sports Centre and Engineering buildings. We use integrated building information modelling service (BIM) on all our projects to better serve our clients and drive improvements in our design quality and remain at the cutting edge of the market.
Reporting directly to the project leader and group leadership, and leading projects and managing the work of others, you will be a key member within this multi-disciplinary and versatile team. Your skills will be instrumental in leading and delivering high quality engineering services. You will have opportunities to lead significant single and multidisciplinary projects ensuring high quality deliverables and managing budgets.
Types of projects we work on:
• Commercial Sector: Paradise Circus: Engineers for One and Two Chamberlain Sq (172,000sqft, 183,00sqft) and One Centenary Way (280,000sqft) Grade A offices
• Public & Transport: HS2: Concept designers for both Curzon St Station and Birmingham Interchange
• Education: UoB: Engineers for the new Sports Centre and Library
• Industrial: JLR: Engineers for i54 (Wolverhampton) and Project Chamberlin (Coventry). Daimler: New assembly plant, Moscow
• Arts & Culture: Designers for the Statue of Unity, India (the tallest Statue in the World)
• Heritage: The Grand Hotel refurbishment, Birmingham.
As senior structural engineer you will be responsible for the structural design for small to medium sized projects (up to £100M). This will include;
Working closely with clients and collaborators from project conception to completion.
Managing teams of engineers and technicians on small to medium sized projects with responsibility for monitoring both quality of design and commercial performance.
You will be responsible for interpreting the client brief and preparing costed plans of tasks and activities to deliver the clients requirements.
You will lead on preparing designs at all stages from scheme through to detail, communicating solutions to our clients and collaborators through sketches, presentations, reports and contract documentation.
A key part of the role will be managing and supervising the production of technical drawings and specifications.
You will have opportunity to refine our designs and design processes to ensure that we produce the highest quality product for our clients.
Ideally you will be an inquisitive, creative, solution-orientated designer. You will be a collaborative, persuasive and engaging individual who gives their all to ensure the client is happy and that the solution is high-quality and practical.
You will report to a project Director and you will have access to formal and informal support teams and resources.
You may be required to work away from your normal office from time to time
Requirements and skills
Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant engineering discipline. 2.1 or higher BEng is essential.
The degree may be Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering but must include advanced structural analysis and design.
MEng or equivalent preferred
Chartered Membership of ICE and/or IStructE
You will typically have around 10 year’s post graduate experience of structural and civil engineering design of buildings. Ideally this will be in a variety of sectors, structural forms and materials. You should be able to demonstrate analytical, creative and conceptual thinking as well as a sound understanding of structural principles.
You will have experience of leading structural building projects in a range of construction sectors.
Experience of leading, producing and issuing schemes and detailed designs.
Experience in approval, review, management, preparation and checking of well-presented design calculations, notes, reports and general correspondence.
You will need to be able to evaluate options, consider the consequences and implications, reach conclusions and lead on and implement your decisions.
You will be conversant with Eurocode and leading industry analysis and design software.
Experience in managing production of 3D Revit modelling.
Experience of wider aspects of projects including architectural, building services and other aspects
Experience of commercial management of projects and successfully delivering projects to time and budget
Desirable skills and knowledge:
We are looking for someone who has a passion for the complete engineering design of buildings. Candidates should be able to present their understanding of how other building engineering factors may influence the successful implementation of their design ideas.
Ability to sketch clearly, showing design concepts and details
Ability in Revit.
Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
Experience of business development.
Understanding of commercial realities and business needs, and practical experience of these aspects.
