Vacancy: Senior Scientist (Process Innovation)

Location: Chilton Site, Billingham, UK

Johnson Matthey are currently recruiting for a Senior Scientist. This is an exciting opportunity to join Johnson Matthey’s rapidly expanding Battery Materials business, which is a material science and electrochemistry-based business with global reach. This role will be at the heart of the activities focused on development and manufacturing of advanced materials for the fast-growing battery market, working in a lean team with a start-up mentality driving to become a world-class large-scale producer.

In this role you will contribute to delivery of key process development programmes for future manufacturing assets. They will require excellent technical competence allied with strong practical and project management skills. The role will be highly visible within the Battery Materials business due to its strategic impact.

Key responsibilities

* Hands-on process development including designing, conducting, interpreting and reporting laboratory scale and pilot scale experiments

* Closely interface with other groups (R&D, supply chain, project engineering, and external parties) to design, coordinate and drive process development projects

* Identify, and develop working relationships with, third party laboratories, equipment manufacturers, and technology providers to advance process science and development

* Manage, analyse and interpret scientific data to guide optimisation of critical processing parameters

* Work with the IP department to identify, document and protect new intellectual property resulting from project work, as well as to identify relevant external intellectual property

* Prepare and deliver compelling and robust reports/presentations to various levels of management

* Proactively contribute to a world class safety culture in development activities

Are you the ideal candidate?

You will:

* Be degree-qualified in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a similar subject (postgraduate degrees, or chartered professional registration will be viewed as advantageous)

* Have had experience in process development programmes

* Experience in leading scientific teams and managing, interpreting, and reporting scientific data sets

* Ideally have experience in the scale-up of relevant process technologies such as inorganic wet reaction chemistry, filtration, solids handling, drying and calcination

* Ideally have experience with handling metal oxides / hazardous inorganic materials

* Be delivery focussed to business-critical timescales and able to work under pressure

* Be a self-starter and energetic – keen to learn about new materials and technologies

* Be a strong communicator and team player

* Pay close attention to detail and focus on quality of delivery, with excellent analytical and verbal/written reporting skills

* Have a stringent attitude to working safely
