* Develop novel high performance electric motor topologies and advanced control systems.
* Use of 2D/3D static and transient electromagnetic Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to model detailed aspects of brushless motor designs.
* Develop and use dynamic system simulation (Matlab/Simulink, MathCad) to:
* Accurately model motor performance
* Develop the motor controls to meet the target performance
* Optimise the electromagnetic design to meet product specific requirements, e.g. lowest cost/smallest and most efficient solution.
* Test & validate new motor drive designs
* Work with other Dyson motor drives, power electronics, software and mechanical engineers from Malmesbury and Singapore to ensure that the product performance, reliability and cost expectations are met, all within the planned timeline of the project.
* Knowledge of electromagnetic machine design theory coupled with experience in the use of 2D/3D static and transient electromagnetic FEA, preferably using Infolytica’s MagNet.
* Experience in the design of permanent magnet motors, including knowledge of soft and hard magnetic materials and their use in electrical machines.
* Experience in laboratory-based testing and validation of electric motors and software-controlled drive systems.
* Experience in the system level dynamic simulation of motor drives (including electronics and software aspects of the drive), preferably using Matlab/Simulink and its use in the development and optimisation of electromagnetic motor design and motor control algorithms.
* Knowledge of various motor control techniques for low and high speed, single-phase and multi-phase permanent magnet and switched reluctance motors.
* Understanding of mechanical, aero-acoustic and thermal aspects of electrical motor design would be a benefit.
* Be creative to put existing knowledge into tangible, highly novel end-products with strong performance improvements and Intellectual Property (IP) benefits.
* Be highly self-motivated and self-reliant with high level of enthusiasm with enthusiasm for motors and power systems.
* Be flexible to respond quickly to changes in project priorities and ideally be willing to travel between Malmesbury and Singapore offices.
* Be able to demonstrate sound theoretical knowledge, reasoning and problem solving skills in engineering.
* Be able to plan and maintain your activities under the supervision of the project discipline lead.
* Be able to clearly report progress in regular update meetings together with producing a high standard of documentation.
* Having graduated from a relevant post-doctoral degree with a mix of high level of practical as well as theoretical knowledge and/or having industrial experience in the field would be desirable. However, a minimum of a good first degree in electrical/electronic engineering or equivalent preferably with a machines and drives bias would also be taken into consideration.
* For applicants from non-English speaking countries, proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory.
