About the Role

As one of the world’s leading engineering, professional services and technical consultancy firms, at WSP, we’re passionate about the big questions. And big answers, naturally. For us that’s all about reaching beyond the expected to do work that’ll make a profound impact felt long into the future.

As part of our Transport Planning capability, the Development Infrastructure team specialises in providing high level advice to mainly private sector clients on planning and design issues relating to highways, public realm, signal design, sewerage, SUDS, building drainage, earthworks, flood protection and utilities coordination/diversion on residential, retail, industrial and commercial developments both in the UK and overseas.

Regionally, we operate through our northern offices in Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow. We are seeking an enthusiastic Senior Engineer level infrastructure engineer to provide regional support to the development infrastructure capability in the North West. The person will be based in the Manchester or Liverpool office.

The team also works closely with other WSP disciplines on high profile major multi-disciplinary projects.

You will work within a team to produce designs and drawings for construction projects and deliver technical reports for masterplanning and to support planning applications. You can expect to be active on a number of projects and client accounts at any given time. You will report to an Associate Director.

All staff are encouraged and assisted to progress their training towards ICE Incorporated or Chartered status, with internal and external training opportunities provided.

A typical week would include:

* Working as a design engineer working within small teams produce designs and drawings to support planning applications and construction.

* Working on a number of projects and client accounts, liaising with clients at a local and national level.

* Mentoring and managing early career professionals ensuring technical excellence is in everything we deliver.

* Day to day project management support in the delivery of concept studies and strategies with hands on design, leading to planning applications or construction drawing issue.

About You

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

* A civil engineering degree and be approaching chartered status with experience in highway and highway drainage design. You will have strong post graduate experience in a civil engineering working environment. The range of disciplines within Development Infrastructure is quite wide so you might have experience of some rather than all, but there is opportunity to specialize within the discipline or develop the wider range of skills.

* The ability to produce masterplans, site appraisals, write reports to support planning applications, design calculations and construction drawings. An understanding of highway design and highway drainage principles (layout, parameters, etc.).

* Experience in the design of highways using PDS (or similar software packages) together with experience in applying Highways England and Local Authority design guidance.

* The ability to work effectively with colleagues including more senior and junior staff in producing designs, drawings and reports is essential. You will need to have good written and spoken communication skills and be able to work as part of a team.

* Sound knowledge of the relevant design codes such as Sewers for Adoption, DMRB and Local Authority Design Guides, to be well versed in the preparation of drawings for Contract Documents and S278 and S38 Agreements. You will be able to prepare designs for highway schemes including associated highway drainage.

* A consultancy or development background with a balance of private and public sector work. You will contribute to the delivery of concept studies and strategies with hands on design, leading to planning applications or construction drawing issue. You will have proven experience and an interest in helping the junior members of the team in producing designs.
