As a Senior Highway Drainage Engineer, you'll work within a team to provide senior technical design input on highway drainage and other non-highway drainage projects for mainly public sector clients (Highways England and Local Authorities). To ensure accurate and efficient project delivery for internal and external clients.

Role involves working with and assisting junior engineers in the delivery of the design work on a variety of drainage projects. Projects include drainage strategies, feasibility studies as well as outline and detailed scheme designs. Role also requires hydraulic modelling using industry standard software – in particular Micro Drainage.

A typical week would include:

1. Provide senior technical design input on drainage projects as part of a project team.

2. Delivering strategies, feasibility studies & developing engineering options in detail.

3. Coordinating Design Assessments / Reviews.

4. Overseeing report preparation / CAD drawings.

5. Micro Drainage modelling and reviews.

6. Developing and maintaining good client relationships.

7. Assisting and overseeing work of junior Engineers.

8. Lead project meetings internally and with clients.

9. Take responsibility for own continuing professional development.

10. Operate in accordance with the corporate health and safety, environmental and quality standards.

Work may require travel in the UK or work in client offices.

About You

We'd love to hear from you if you have:


You will have significant experience in undertaking highway drainage and other non-highway drainage design, ideally gained within a consultancy environment.

A detailed understanding of highway drainage design to DMRB Volume 4 Section 2 and MCHW Series 500 is essential along with Micro Drainage hydraulic modelling experience.

You should have the knowledge to prepare estimates of future work for incorporation in proposals, and be comfortable leading on projects and meeting with clients to discuss present and future projects.

Technical/Business Skills/Ability:

Your role will involve working with and supervising engineers delivering design work on a variety of drainage projects for both internal and external clients.

You’ll be an experienced and capable problem solver with good time and people and project management skills.


Degree in an Engineering or Numerate Science related subject.

Professional Membership of an appropriate engineering institution preferable.
