Senior Environmental Consultant

Background

Capita (a FTSE 250 company) is looking to recruit a Senior Environmental Consultant with practical experience of coordinating environmental impact assessment (EIA), strategic environmental assessment management (SEA) and general environmental management to join our Real Estate and Infrastructure team in one of three offices across the southwest of England.

Following years of continued success and growth, the successful candidate will be part of a close-knit, progressive Environmental Team and will work closely with a range of in-house technical specialists to support delivery of a variety of projects in the Water, Rail, Highways and Tunnels divisions. Our key clients include the Environment Agency, HS2, Local Authorities and other leading national and international infrastructure providers.

The role will entail agreeing and managing scopes of work, the timely delivery of programmes, the management of project finances and competent provision of project deliverables. The capability to successfully cost and bid for work would be advantageous, as would experience of supporting and developing more junior staff.

Specific Requirements

As part of your role you will be asked to the technical aspects of projects, from feasibility to detailed design, with particular regards to the environmental assessment process, providing expert advice, applying for consents and the submission of planning applications.

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level in an environmental or scientific discipline and will have achieved, or be working towards, chartered status and / or full or associate membership of a recognised professional body. They will also have a wide range of skill sets and a willingness to become involved in a broad selection of projects. In particular the successful applicant will:

Have significant experience in coordinating and delivering multidisciplinary EIA/SEA;

*

Have a thorough knowledge of relevant UK environmental legislation, EIA/SEA and Environmental Agency and planning processes and a broad understanding of the technical specialisms required for EIA/SEA;

*

Be able to work collaboratively with a range of technical specialists;

*

Have good interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate issues and ideas effectively both internally and externally, including key stakeholders;

*

Have strong written, verbal and presentational skills;

*

Provide expert guidance to clients, government agencies, regulators and other relevant bodies, having regard for environmental / sustainable approaches and best practice solutions;

*

Communicate scientific and technical information to relevant audiences in an appropriate form, via reports, workshops or other;

*

Be able to work within a team and motivate others to deliver to high standards;

*

Be proficient at assessing any adverse impact on the environment;

*

Have a proven track record at delivering deliver Projects in line with strict time and financial constraints;

*

Have a strong eye for detail;

*

Be able to prioritise and work effectively under pressure and to strict deadlines;

*

At times of asking, be effective at working remotely;

*

Be flexible, adaptable and prepared to take on new challenges from other aspects of the Capita function;

*

Have a full and clean UK/EEC driving licence; and

*

Have an interest in developing technical skills as part of ongoing career development.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

*

Coordinating and managing environmental work being undertaken by multi-disciplinary teams for EIA/SEA, options appraisals, planning and/or environmental management;

*

Competently judge the requirements of a Project;

*

Competently undertake own work to an excellent standard; on time and to budget;

*

Reviewing, summarising and presenting information in a clear and concise way, that is understandable to non-specialists, both verbally and in written format;

*

Provide constructive peer review and feedback;

*

Working as part of a project team to influence project development;

*

Identification and application of appropriate best practice methods;

*

Representing the company in a professional and exemplary manner;

*

Undertaking Continual Professional Development (CPD) in accordance with requirements of your chosen professional institute and work towards becoming chartered.
