Senior Engineering Manager - Naval Architecture & Weights
Would you like to work within one of our most diverse engineering functions? We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Engineering Manager - Naval Architecture & Weights at our site in Barrow.
As a Senior Engineering Manager - Naval Architecture & Weights, you will be leading a multi-discipline team of highly skilled specialists in the fields of Hydrodynamics, Hydrostatics, Infrastructure, Concepts and Weights Engineering.
This role will provide you with an opportunity to work on new submarine designs, all the way from cradle to grave – full lifecycle, covering the full remit of Naval Architecture.
Your main responsibilities as a Senior Engineering Manager within Naval Architecture & Weights will involve:
Development and sustainment of a collaborative team based on the appropriate mix of SQEP in order to maintain long term stability in Naval Architecture capability (through recruitment, development and retention strategies)
To ensure all engineering activities and resulting outputs are undertaken to the appropriate quality, process, cost and schedule
To support the Engineering Delivery Manager by providing project deliverables to time, cost and schedule as driven by the Dreadnought programme. Ensuring all engineering activities and resulting outputs are undertaken to the appropriate quality, process, cost and schedule
To undertake strategic planning for the department to ensure alignment of business objectives between Submarine business unit and departmental level
Responsible for establishing and reviewing all policies and procedures relating to Naval Architecture within the shipyard
Provide whole boat / ship design expertise in support of the core and adjacent business projects
Create an environment of continuous learning and development for all members of the department, to ensure that Naval Architecture capabilities are maintained in order to support both core and adjacent business into the future
Act as the point of contact for all Naval Architecture related activities both within the Submarines business unit and to support wider BAE Systems as required.
Your skills and qualifications:
Degree Qualified in STEM subject
Experience in Naval Architecture with experience in or understanding of:
Manoeuvring and sea trials
Leadership of Naval Architecture

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.
The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.
Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines. We will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first submarine entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world's most complex engineering challenges.
