About the Role:

We are seeking a Senior Engineer to join our growing Development Infrastructure (DI) team in Cardiff.

The Team specialises in providing advice, planning support and sustainable development infrastructure solutions mainly for private sector clients on issues relating to highways, public realm, sewerage, SUDS, building drainage, flood protection and utilities coordination/ diversion for residential, retail, industrial and commercial developments both in the UK and overseas. The team also works closely with other WSP disciplines across a wide range of sectors and projects involving different disciplines.

All staff are encouraged and assisted to progress their training and personal development towards TMICE, ICE Incorporated or Chartered status (whichever is most appropriate) with internal and external training opportunities provided.

A typical week would include:

* Acting as the designer working within the team to produce designs and drawings to accompany planning applications and for construction. You can expect an active involvement and to be contributing to a number of work sectors, projects and client accounts at any given time. You will report to a Principal Engineer or Associate.

* Being supported by a team of experienced technical staff of various grades, to whom you will be expected to provide guidance and support, as and where appropriate.

* Client and design team liaison, and depending upon your experience, assisting in the preparation of fee proposals, day-to-day project management, financial control of projects and business development activities.

* Ensuring that projects you are involved are delivered to budget, programme and technical standards and meet QA, CDM and HSE requirements.

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

* A degree in Civil Engineering and a number of year’s post-graduate experience, and ideally be working towards IEng or CEng status or equivalent (e.g. MCIWEM).

* The ability to demonstrate a sound knowledge and experience of highway engineering design (both S38 and S278) and S104 drainage design and at least an awareness of the legal, planning and technical consent processes, and adoption and contract procedures for the provision of sewers, SUDS, and highways in new developments and regeneration projects.

* Experience in residential design (private and adoptable), hydraulics and hydrology, flood risk assessment and management, utility coordination and diversions, and knowledge of the national Planning Policy Framework and associated technical guidance.

* Been actively maintaining knowledge of current and emerging technical and planning guidance.

* A robust knowledge of the financial and contractual aspects of planning, bidding, and delivering both large and small projects. You should also have experience of liaising with Clients, co-professionals and design teams, and working with statutory authorities to negotiate outline and detailed technical approvals.

* The ability to prepare highway and drainage designs, both private and adoptable, applying the principles, design codes and standards set out in the SuDS Manual, Sewers for Adoption, DMRB, Manual for Streets and Local Authority Design Guides.

* Working knowledge of at least one of the following software packages; AutoCAD, Microdrainage, PDS, and Civils 3D.

* Ability to work with more senior and junior staff in producing designs is essential. You will need to have good written and spoken communication skills and be able to work as part of a team.

* A Consultancy or Development background with a bias towards private sector work. Ability to recognise own limitations, exercise judgement and seek clarity of instructions, check own work before submitting for approval, and agree and meet timescales for items of work.
