Senior Data Scientist

Location: Any of our offices (ideally Bristol or London)

The OVO Group’s purpose is to drive progress towards net zero carbon living. To reach Plan Zero, we need everyone to come together - not just as customers buying energy, but as members with a common goal. As part of this ambitious plan, our goal is to become the ‘Leading Employer in the UK’ by 2030.

We launched in 2009 with a mission to change energy for the better. Since then, we’ve welcomed over a million members, planted a million trees, and set our sights on helping save the planet.

As a Group, we’re working to become a net zero carbon business by 2030, while helping our OVO Energy members halve their carbon footprints at the same time.

Green energy and technology are great tools to fight the climate crisis with. But it’s people power that will rewrite history.

So we’re building a zero carbon team inside and out. Of people who share our values, feel inspired by our mission, and want to make change happen. When you work for OVO, it’s not just a job. It’s the work of a lifetime. And we want the sharpest minds to help.

Up for the challenge?

Where in the world of OVO will I be working?

The climate crisis is humanity's greatest challenge and the OVO Group organisations are all working together to lower our collective carbon emissions to zero. Increasingly, the data which we collect has scaled hugely and is multi faceted and complex. There is an opportunity to become a truly AI business, with market changing innovation and finely optimised processes leading to zero carbon and low cost for customers.

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist with strong technical expertise, and hands-on experience building end to end data science products. Primarily you will work within cross functional, product teams, but might be required to contribute to specific data science or analytics initiatives. You will also play a key role helping technical and non-technical stakeholders, to make data-driven decisions.

You’ll ensure that data science efforts are aligned towards achieving the team’s objectives and wider company goals. As a senior member of the team you will influence product decisions identifying new data centric opportunities to deliver on companies objectives.

You will help define and support best practices across teams and participate in the data science community of practice activities.

What will I be doing?

Key responsibilities include:

* Taking a leading role in demonstrating the value data science can add to teams across OVO Energy.
* Working with stakeholders to understand their data science needs and delivering projects (or offering guidance) to drive their strategy.
* Being responsible for the delivery of projects from start to finish, figuring out right level of time to spend (applying 80/20 principle appropriately) and evaluating value post delivery.
* Using your knowledge of statistics, operations research and machine learning/AI to quickly assess different models and select the most appropriate approach. Using these same skills, rigorously assess the validity of any results and ensure that conclusions are understood by the relevant stakeholders and are actionable.
* Utilise standard data science tools and programming languages (SQL, Python, Github) to both carry out analysis and build robust models.
* Using you understanding of engineering principles to design, productionise and test these models.
* Working with Production Engineers to put your analysis and models into production
* Communicating and presenting sophisticated data to audiences of all technical levels. Using appropriate data visualisations to tell a story with data.
* Coach junior team members and contribute to defining data science best practices.
* Play an active role in community activities that stimulate a culture of collaboration, openness, and innovation.
* Identifying potential opportunities and risks of future data science projects.

Is this the job for me?

Ideally you will have:

* Proven data science work experience.
* Experience delivering data science models in a production setting on a cloud environment, with a good understanding of data architecture and productization best practices.
* Experience with engineering best practice, including CI/CD, containerisation and testing.
* Ability to simplify large problems into comprehensive testable hypothesis balancing : model metrics, team effort and potential business value.
* Deep theoretical and practical understanding of data science algorithms and statistics.
* Ability to engage with multiple stakeholders to drive meaningful conversations and actions that will have a direct impact on project planning and delivery.
* Experience coaching & mentoring Junior Data Scientists and interest in participating in the data science community of practice technical discussions and presentations.
* Knowledge of natural language processing concepts and techniques for extracting information from unstructured text.
* Understanding of deep learning concepts and techniques, and ability to repurpose publicly available neural networks using transfer learning.
* Experience with workflow managers such as Airflow and Beam.
