This opportunity exists within the Earth Observation, Navigation and Science (ENS) business unit of Airbus Defence and Space Ltd. in Portsmouth, where we have a long heritage in development, build and test of space-borne radar and passive microwave payloads for Earth Observation. Working within a trans-national organisation and with an emphasis on microwave instrumentation and technology, you can be involved in a variety of programmes, from studies and R&D through to space-flight payload development, in an innovative environment dealing with unique and challenging new remote sensing sensor concepts, e.g. the Copernicus ROSE-L Synthetic Aperture Radar, and the TRUTHS Hyperspectral Imaging Spectrometer for ESA’s Earth Watch programme.

During this internship, the activities you may undertake will include;



State-of-the-art technology studies in the field of space-based Earth Observation missions and payloads



Preparation of trade-offs and technical budgets for payloads/instruments



Development and analysis of conceptual designs, including use of CAD tools



Support to pre-development and prototyping activities, including potential laboratory work



Preparation of reports and presentations



Participation in meetings with customers and suppliers

Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following;



Currently studying an Aerospace, Engineering or Science degree



Keen interest and capability in microwave design and analysis, radar or radio communications



Keen interest in, and some understanding of the space industry and related Airbus activities in the sector



Experience with office software applications and CAD tools (e.g. Matlab, Autodesk, ADS, HFSS, etc.)



Ability to take initiative and operate effectively with minimal supervision within an overall project team



Passion for engineering design and innovation



A practical capability and positive mind-set, with a disposition to learn on-the-job



Excellent verbal and written communication skills



Good interpersonal communications and team-working
