A vacancy for a “SatCom Solution Architect (m/f)” has arisen within Airbus Defence & Space in France or UK. You will join the System Programmes Delivery Departement at Secure Communications within CIS.

This position can located either in France (Elancourt, Toulouse), UK (Newport, Portsmouth, Stevenage), Local conditions apply.

Within ADS engineering, and under the leadership of the Solution leader for Satellite Communications Systems, belonging to the Secure Communications business line, the job holder will define, steer and lead the implementation of the architecture and technical bricks as key elements of the Satcom solution.

This position will require a security clearance or will require being eligible for clearance by the recognized authorities.

Business trips required, typically short (1-3 days) across mainly Europe, and occasionally worldwide

Description job :

Secure Communication offers and delivers satellite based communication systems and services, for military and government applications, in Europe and more globally. There is also a strong will to become an actor on some key commercial new ground segment, such as for LEO/MEO constellation.

In order to address new opportunities for this market, Secure Communication is building solutions to reinforce its offer (systems, products, and services) and support growth on this market.

The job holder will be part of Communication & IT platform engineering teams, which provides technical expertise and engineering delivery capabilities to support the CIS/Secure Communication business line

You will work on a full time basis jointly with the Satcom Solution Leader from Secure Communication. Beyond his own contribution, he will be able to rely on the available competences and expertise available in the Product Management team as well as in the Engineering teams, which are located in France, Germany and the UK.

Tasks & accountabilities

During the Solution business plan building phase, you will :

Analyse the currently available technical offering (customer solution, system/product/component and technical assets/service portfolio), performs a technical-economical assessment of competitors , contribute to SWOT analysis, identify axis for reinforcement and improvement (technical, cost base, ..)
Contribute to build the business case for various solutions for satellite communication ground segment (governmental and/or military) by bringing technical inputs allowing the solution(s) offer positioning , defining its high level architecture and constituents, building the associated development plan (cost/schedule/resource), relying on internally available assets in SC portfolio as well as other business assets (e.g. Space Systems)
Contribute to define the solution requirements
Define the preliminary system architecture (CONOPS, functional analysis and architecture, system breakdown, main components)
Contribute to analyse and trade-offs among possible solutions
Define the required R&T/R&D needs (content/scope/cost/schedule) hence contributing to R&T/D roadmap building and the associated solution roadmap
Build together with other stakeholders Make/Buy/Partner technical strategy,
Building a standardized solution offer
Contribute to Maturity Gate milestones for solution, components and products Interact with Business Development, Bid Support, solution & product portfolio, technical leads for SatCom programs, in coordination with the Solution Manager

During the solution creation and delivery phase, your activitie shall progressively shift to:

Becoming the Solution Technical Lead (equivalent to a program Chief Engineer/Lead System Engineer)
Building the solution System Engineering Management Plan (scope, budget, structure (WBS/PBS/OBS/CBS), technical project guidelines, development schedule, resource plan)
Setting up and the leading the Solution Development according the proposed plan ,
Contribute to RFI/RFP, in order to ensure the success of the solution to meet the market , adjusting the solution scope and plan to meet the specific customer and market requirements (cost, time to market, scope)

Competences et experiences :

Educated to 5 years’ degree level (or equivalent) in Engineering Communication or --******to 10 years experiences within telecommunications industry, with a significant exposure to satellite communication, typically during initial definition up to delivery of satellite communication ground systems
Knowledge of satellite communication industry and ecosystem (players, trends, technologies) :
Knowledge of architecture and functions for space segment GEO/MEO/LEO and ground segment (control and user ground communication , user terminals, system planning and configuration, external interfaces
Sensible to the economic aspects of the projects
Complex system engineering in telecom, with radio, transmission, IP network, crypto, planning and management subsystems
Context of military and governmental projects
Context of the “new space” actors and projects
System Engineering methods
Setting up and leading a project in a complex technical environment : 1st experience as a WPM or a lead system engineer
Collaborative projects environment, with several internal and external stakeholder (partner, suppliers)

Soft skills :

Autonomy, leadership, taking over responsibilities
Methodical, curious and willing to learn and make things move and change
Communication skills both verbal and written in English and French, German is a plus
Negotiation skills , ability to convince
Ability to play in team work, problem solving, motivating a team that may be partly or fully a virtual team
Able to face challenging situation
