Ecologia part of the RSK Group Ltd is a multi-disciplinary, specialist contaminated land consultant/contractor that provides advice and undertakes site investigation and remediation projects across the UK and Europe.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer to join our busy and growing team in the South East.

Research Scientist/Engineer – Sittingbourne, Kent

The Role

We are seeking a motivated and ambitious individual with a focus on the development of new technologies associated with our core activities (i.e. Land, groundwater and geotechnical site investigation and remediation) to join our team in Sittingbourne, Kent.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be required to work closely with our Directors, Project Managers and Engineering Manager to research and assess the development of new technologies for land remediation and/or the optimisation of remediation design and monitoring. The role will also include supporting aspects of commercial project work including site visits, field tests, monitoring and data assessment.

Duties will include:

* Capacity to quickly assess the ‘proof of concept’ for innovative and/or emerging technologies which will allow the company to determine whether there is potential to develop further the technology for development commercial process.

* Design, plan and carry out a range of tests & experiments related to a specific project or new product often in close liaison with the engineering team

* Apply the most current understanding of contaminant behaviour to existing and upcoming projects for their optimisation.

* Carry out analysis and critical appraisal of data from laboratory and field tests and/or results from other sources, such as commercial tests or published results.

* Ensure results are recorded accurately.

* Provide scientific/engineer assistance in current projects where needed across all Ecologia service lines.

* Prepare detailed method statements, carry out field testing on site visits.

* Present and communicate results as stand alone findings or incorporate into a broader research or commercial project in a clear and concise manner. Any relevant and significant findings may also be submitted for journal publication or presented at a conference.

* Keep well informed about developments in the science of contaminated land remediation and monitoring. This can cover the scientific literature and commercial developments.

* Maintain a small laboratory and continue to develop it to enable the company to carry out an increasing range of measurements and experiments in-house.

* Work safely at all times, follow Company rules and procedures designed to ensure the quality of products and services provided to our Clients and to create a safe place of work, and protect the environment using the correct tools and equipment for the job;

Key Skills & Experience Required

* Qualified to degree level in an environment/land/geotechnical related subject; however, candidates from other engineering background with experience of remediation works may also be considered.

* Minimum of 1 year professional experience within the contaminated land/remediation sector or alternatively an MSc or PhD qualification.

* Understanding of UK contaminated land regime and remediation technologies and health and safety regulations.

* Have awareness of installation and operation of remediation processes.

* Excellent communication skills.

Desirable skills & experience

* Working towards specific professional chartership CEnv, C.WEM, CSci etc.

* Previous lab experience to perform feasibility lab trials, research and development.

* Commercial understanding of projects.

* Practical knowledge of installation and operation of remediation systems or monitoring equipment.

* Knowledge of graphic software packages such AutoCad and/or Sigmaplot etc.

The successful candidate will have good literacy and reporting skills, a flexible attitude to work, and possess the enthusiasm and drive to deliver the requirements of this role.

The ability to work as an effective member of a team and on your own initiative will be essential, along with excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.

The job will require a willingness to travel; a full UK/EC driving license is essential.
