We are currently seeking a Rail Systems Team Leader to work within
a multidisciplinary team delivering a portfolio of exciting, varied rail
projects as part of an established and expanding Rail Business. The post is
within the Rail Engineering Midlands Group, which comprises of over 80 dynamic
and enthusiastic engineers, designers and railway technicians based in the
Midlands Campus in Solihull, West Midlands, which contains many Arup
multidisciplinary businesses and has over 820 technical staff. The Rail Systems
team is expanding and currently composes of 8-10 individuals covering a range
of systems specialities. The vacancy is available for full or part time
will be part of the team responsible for the successful delivery of our design
commissions for our major clients including Network Rail, HS2, LUL, Contractors
(in a design and build context) and other agencies such as Train Operators,
Councils, Passenger Transport Executives and academic institutions.
multidisciplinary projects include HS2 Phase 2a, HS2 Phase 2b (lot 3), Birmingham
Interchange station, Transpennine Route Upgrade – West of Leeds, major depot
remodelling, Crossrail 2, Euston Station B2 (NR GRIP 3), Digital Railway, GRIP
4-8 detailed design commissions for major Railway infrastructure contractors,
and numerous GRIP Stage 1-4 commissions for Network Rail, TfGM and TfN. Current multidisciplinary projects include
design works for High Speed, Mainline and Metro rail projects across the world,
with design commissions for MTRC (Hong Kong), Transport for New South Wales (Australia)
LTA (Singapore) - these range from Feasibility to Detailed Design.

Role – What we are looking for in you
looking for a passionate, commercially aware Rail Systems Team Leader with
sound technical knowledge to be an integral part of our Rail team. Ensuring the successful delivery of
technically excellent multidisciplinary rail projects and bids across our UK
portfolio, you will be responsible for, and typical activities will include:
* Leading the
railway systems activities including technical assurance, requirements,
standards, configuration and interface management, performance,
reliability, availability, maintainability and safety (PRAMS) and
electromagnetic capability (EMC) within projects and providing technical
support to multidisciplinary design teams on large or medium sized
* Managing the
task/activity allocation of railway systems activities across the team,
and leading winning work for system activities that contribute to the rail
team business growth
* Determining the
Railway Systems requirements from our client brief making sound decisions
to produce the right design solution.
* Managing the day
to day needs and career development of the Rail Systems team, and the
mentoring of Rail team members as part of a strong development culture
across our business.
* Sharing knowledge,
best practice and innovation across our business, providing guidance,
training and feedback with other related disciplines and skills, locally
and across the UK.
* Flexibility to
travel to our other UK sites and potentially the wider Arup worldwide to
support opportunities and projects.
Essential Skills and Knowledge
knowledge and experience of railway systems, the key interactions between
other railway assets, and with railway operating practices.
* Able to
demonstrate expertise in one or more rail systems related disciplines,
technical assurance, design, requirements, standards, configuration and
interface management, PRAMS, EMC and the wider System Engineering.
* Able to
demonstrate a good understanding of technical assurance, requirements,
standards, configuration and interface management in the context of its
* Experience as the
leader of Rail Systems teams or multidiscipline project teams.
hands-on experience of checking or approval of designs
Desirable Skills and Knowledge
* Experienced in
leading and the integration of complex systems at the design stage as well
as being able to contribute using specialist skills as demonstrated in the

knowledge of systems engineering design principles, standards and

of other systems engineering domains and their processes
* Able to prepare
and lead tender specifications for Clients and also prepare technical
proposals in response to Tenders from Clients
* Experience of
managing projects, bids or workpackages.
* Familiarity with
engineering safety management practice e.g. Common Safety Method, Yellow
Book or equivalent
* Good Science,
Mathematics or Engineering Degree or Higher qualification
* A member of the IET or similar professional
* Chartered Engineer status or working towards CEng
