1. Systems and infrastructure – provide systems consultancy, engineering and design with the aim of improving performance of road networks, including Smart Motorways and Expressways, by identifying how to apply, and applying, technology to make a difference.
2. Safety and operations – have significant high-end consultancy skills and are led by user and customer experience to deliver operational change on the ‘whole’ system involving infrastructure, operations and systems - people, process and technology.
3. Lighting and energy solutions – provide comprehensive lighting and electrical consultancy, design and engineering services.

We are looking for people with the ability to make a difference, pro-actively lead projects to ensure we manage requirements, budgets, schedules and risks and influence others to deliver successfully. Candidates must possess experience in the leadership and management of significant projects or programmes of work, have strong technical capability and excellent communication, problem solving and project / programme management skills, and be willing to take on new challenges.
As a Project Director on medium to large multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects, you will be responsible for the strategic direction, planning, control, delivery and completion of specific projects. You will have extensive experience of working with client teams in a collaborative and integrated manner and will be required to lead our projects within the requirements of the WSP Business Management System, as well as to meet client requirements.
You will be accountable for delivery of projects to contractual arrangements and the financial outcome agreed whilst ensuring projects achieve safe, sustainable and efficient outcomes that meet client satisfaction objectives. You will provide leadership, direction and mentoring to Project Managers, responsible for large scale multi-disciplinary teams developing high quality solutions on time and to budget.
As Project Director you will ensure that all company safety, quality, environmental, commercial and project management procedures are followed across projects and that appropriate resources and expertise are made available to safely deliver, sustainable and efficient outcomes that meet agreed profit and client satisfaction objectives.
You will ensure threats and opportunities for successful delivery are identified at an early stage and are being regularly reviewed, and that risk mitigation actions are identified and undertaken by the project manager. Responding to and dealing with any contractual/commercial risks as soon as they are identified and develop Project risk management strategies.
As growth is important to WSP, you will have the ability to prepare bids, draft and negotiate consultancy contracts. You will be able to develop and maintain relationships with clients, peers and others who are influential in providing future business.
Qualifications and work experience
You will have a degree, in relevant engineering or management discipline and be registered with an appropriate professional institution. Having a post-graduate qualifications in APM/MSP/PMI/PRINCE2/Six Sigma would be an advantage.
You will have extensive experience of delivering medium to large sized multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects, be well respected within the industry with a network of client, consultant and contractor contacts and relationships. You will have a proven track record of dealing with Clients and forging effective and collaborative relationships in a professional and customer focused manner. You will be able to demonstrate excellent inter-personal skills, including good written and oral communication
Previous experience as Project Director on a Design and Build scheme or working with Highways England within the Smart Motorways environment will be highly advantageous.
As a Project Director you will be able to demonstrate clear and successful project management skills and technical competence, have proven ability to organise, influence and direct the delivery of highway schemes from feasibility to construction. Be able to demonstrate experience of Contract Supervision using either NEC or ICE forms of contract and the proven ability to facilitate effective planning of the works, so that programmes are established and maintained within the project team to ensure timely delivery within a controlled budget.
