Job Summary

AECOM is seeking an ambitious, talented and enthusiastic designer to take on the role of Principal Urban Designer to join its Masterplanning team based at its London Headquarters

The Role:

As a Principal Urban Designer, with a relevant urban design qualification and relevant project experience, you will join our established London team to support senior urban design and planning staff in the production of masterplans, urban design guidance, planning strategies, design & access statements, capacity studies and other outputs in relation to strategic planning and urban design commissions for public and private sector clients.

The successful candidate will have experience working on residential, mixed-use and regeneration masterplanning in a UK context. The urban design team works closely with planning colleagues, so a good appreciation of the UK planning system and policy framework as well as the current planning agenda and key issues would be an advantage. With a strong appreciation of the links between people, place, the environment and the economy, the role will often work as an integral member of multi-disciplinary planning and technical teams on interesting assignments of all sizes, from neighbourhood plans, through large-scale residential-led masterplanning to regional and national strategies.

Current projects within the team include:

*

Sub-regional and city-scale strategic masterplanning and planning projects in Europe and the UK;

*

Large residential-led urban extensions for new communities in the UK;

*

Town centre regeneration strategies feeding into the UK Government’s Towns Fund programme;

*

A number of smaller to middle-sized commissions for national housebuilders;

*

Regeneration and community led-masterplanning in support of several Neighbourhood Planning groups, and

*

Commercial/industrial site and strategic portfolio planning in the UK and internationally.

Responsibilities and Competencies

This is an important, mid-level position within the team, requiring the ability to work as part of an integrated team, to the direction of senior colleagues, but also able to lead individual work packages and assume elements of project responsibility to support senior colleagues.

Technical Abilities

*

Regularly undertake key tasks in a timely manner with minimal oversight;

*

Plan out/storyboard complex project tasks (with an end outcome in mind);

*

Explain complex processes and requirements clearly to other members of the team, particularly junior colleagues;

*

Organise and co-ordinate complex project tasks and deliverables, including inputs and outputs by other disciplines that feed into the master planning process;

*

Structure and write reports in a clear, logical and concise manner, and

*

Structure, prepare and deliver progress updates or issue-based presentations.

Commercial Competencies

*

Contribute towards the development of clearly defined proposals / variations and associated resource estimates, schedules and budgets;

*

Work within an agreed scope and communicates variations early;

*

Ability to work to set programmes and milestones;

*

Understand and monitor project budgets;

*

Understand and identify multi-disciplinary project requirements, and

*

Understand and identify project risks and appropriate mitigation measures.

Professional Attitudes

*

Pro-actively communicate clearly and often within a project team, engaging with both senior and more junior colleagues;

*

Provides mentoring for junior team members;

*

Identify, attract and manage outstanding design talent through promotion of teamwork, maintaining positive morale and instilling a creative culture within the practice;

*

Conduct training sessions/courses on new concepts, approaches and/or materials to enhance the capabilities of masterplanning within AECOM’s Urban Advisory group.

Communicates clearly, respectfully and confidently with clients, and

*

Demonstrates an understanding of the importance of Quality Assurance Processes and contribute to those process – diligently ensures by reviewing review work of others.

Minimum Requirements

A CURRENT PORTFOLIO IS REQUIRED TO SUPPORT YOUR APPLICATION

*

A first degree in architecture or landscape architecture and a postgraduate qualification in urban design;

*

Relevant project experience and a good working knowledge of current urban design issues;

*

Competence in the use of the full range of design‐focused packages including AutoCad, Revit, Rhino, Adobe CC and Sketch‐Up, Microsoft Office suite;

*

Confidence and competence in drawing and sketching by hand;

*

The ability to work in a consultancy environment, excellent organisational skills, ability to work independently and show initiative, and successfully manage time to meet project deadlines;

*

The ability to be able to work with senior colleagues as a key member of a multi‐disciplinary team and lead task-level or smaller project teams independently, and

*

Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.

Preferred Qualifications

A postgraduate qualification in urban design;
