Principal Mechanical Engineer

Would you like to deliver professional engineering services to Warship Support in the areas of Naval Marine Mechanical Equipment and Systems? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Mechanical Engineer at our site in Portsmouth.

As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will be required to undertake and routinely lead others in activities across the breadth of the engineering lifecycle to support in-service Naval Marine Platforms.

You will be responsible for providing mechanical engineering capability across a broad set of challenges to meet the needs of specific Naval platforms, the Engineering Projects Group (EPG) team and the customer programme.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work on a wide range of naval ships (working on the T45 destroyer/ QEC). You will be working with all levels of stakeholders delivering engineering decisions at the waterfront, ensuring ships get back to sea on time and with the correct level of integrity.

You will have the opportunity to utilise your professional engineering skills to design and develop marine systems and develop into wider opportunities within BAE.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Mechanical Engineer will involve:

Defining equipment/system technical requirements and applying these to drive the development of design solutions to improve marine mechanical equipment and systems.

Leading design justification activities via calculation for marine mechanical systems and equipment. This shall include mechanical simulation/assessments in the structural, fluid and heat transfer domains.

Appling analysis outputs to demonstrate compliance with safety, functional and performance requirements

Producing design/analysis/technical reports, system/equipment specifications, scopes of work and undertaking assessment of supplier responses.

Establishing relationships with MOD establishments, test facilities, sub-contractors, suppliers and customers as required to satisfy the needs of a project

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

Must have a degree in Mechanical or Marine Engineering

Proven track record in marine systems engineering roles

Knowledge of the systems engineering lifecycle and an ability to apply good systems engineering practices to your work

Have experience in the application of Naval Marine engineering codes and standards to the design of systems and specification of equipment

Awareness of the operating requirements of Naval Platforms and their engineering systems

Desirable:

To have previously worked in producing design definitions for modifications to in-service marine power and propulsion, and auxiliary systems.

Have experience in delivering feasibility and concept studies for future upgrades to naval platform capability

Have experience in technically leading projects through bid and delivery, and supporting other business functions in developing new opportunities
