Wood is recruiting a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our growing New Nuclear and Generation Services business at our Knutsford office. Within our team you will form a key part of our community, supporting a wide range of exciting consultancy projects for a variety of customers across the nuclear industry, primarily in the areas of generating reactors and new build, with possibilities to support decommissioning, defence and fusion reactor work. You will take part in mentoring colleagues to support their development of technical and professional skills throughout their career at Wood.

Reactor support and generation services

Wood has a deep understanding of the complex technical challenges and commercial imperatives of maintaining and improving operational performance and safety of ageing nuclear power plants. Engineering and safety case

Our capability, skills and experience, ranging from engineering design and risk assessment to human factors, puts us at the forefront of technical professional services relating to nuclear safety.

Key Responsibilities

Preparation and/or technical assessment of:

* Reports & Engineering Advice Notes
* Calculations and Calculation Notes
* Design Basis Assessment documents
* Specifications and Engineering Substantiations

In addition:

* Reviewing design and design substantiation for Mechanical equipment/systems
* Producing/revising safety cases for Mechanical equipment/systems
* Advising on maintenance/testing requirements
* Providing advice on wide ranging technical issues and queries relating to Mechanical equipment/systems
* Planning and estimating of engineering work packages
* Production of engineering deliverables in accordance with relevant regulations, codes, standards and Wood/Client quality assurance requirements
* Assist in the design/specification of Mechanical equipment/systems
* Attending and contributing to design / HAZOP and construction reviews
* Ensuring Relevant Good Practice and LFE are incorporated
* Ensuring interaction with other disciplines for known interfaces
* Liaising with customers in your discipline to analyse problems and develop technical solutions
* Developing relationships with clients in order to identify and secure future business
* Supporting the development of contract proposals and tenders
* Checking the work of other team members
* Mentoring junior colleagues
* Delivering work to agreed budgets and timescales to ensure customer satisfaction
* Continuing to develop technical knowledge and competence in field of expertise

Skills / Qualifications

Essential Skills

* Understanding of UK standards and regulations applicable on nuclear facilities
* Experience in the delivery of written work. i.e. specifications, Design Assessment Reports, Engineering Advice Notes, etc.
* Excellent working knowledge of the UK codes
* Experience of working in multifunctional teams
* Self-motivated, with an ability and desire to work collaboratively to create new opportunities
* Ability to think innovatively and solve complex problems
* Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing
* Design substantiation and justification of engineered safety measures
* Communicate clearly and professionally both verbally and in writing with superiors, colleagues, and individuals outside of the Company
* Knowledge of CDM 2015 Regulations

Desirable Skills

* Experience of safety case management work
* Knowledge/experience of design and/or substantiation of Mechanical plant in hazardous/highly regulated environments
* Knowledge/experience of operating in an environment with a graded approach to quality processes
* Familiarity with our major customers and the processes and procedures they use to control work

Qualifications & Experience

* Hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering plus demonstrable experience in the discipline
* Membership of either IMechE
* Either Chartered (CEng) or Incorporated (IEng) status
* Nuclear Industry experience (desirable but not essential)
