Position Title Principal Lean Consultant

United Kingdom - Greater Manchester


Job Summary

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced LEAN Construction practitioner to join this very successful, secure and growing business in the Manchester area.

As Principal Consultant you will be based in Manchester but depending on projects you could spend from a couple of days to a full week at our clients’ sites, there may also be a requirement to visit fellow Architects and other stakeholders in our other offices. There will also be some overseas travel required from time to time. You will report to the Process and Automation Lead for Industrial Consultancy.

The main duties will include; working closely with the senior team to identify opportunities for introducing LEAN/Continuous Improvement into our clients, utilising a variety of tools such as identifying Muda, VSM and SPC. You will forge working partnerships with the sector leads in Automation, Industrialisation, Food and Beverage, Aerospace and Manufacturing and develop collaborative partnerships with our Architecture and Design teams. You will apply and train Lean Manufacturing principles such as Kaizen, Kanban, SMED, 5’s, 5 Why’s and visual management. Gather and analyse accurate information to facilitate change from concept through feasibility to implementation.

The ideal candidate will have a successful track record of change and process improvement within a similar role within the construction business. A degree in Construction Engineering is essential. A certified qualification in Lean Six Sigma is desirable.

You will be working the Process and Automation Team where we specialise in what is called process-led-design. Essentially we work with businesses to help them optimise performance and create efficiencies. But what makes our team different is that our engineers come from the manufacturing industry – they are at home on the factory floor and really understand what is keeping our clients up at night. We assist our clients in solving complex operational challenges. Blending strategic thinking with hands-on practicality, our teams of consultants and experts work to develop and implement operational strategies that solve our clients' most critical problems.

Our Process and Automation Division is part of our Resource and Industry Business and helps leading companies in all industries develop and implement future-oriented lean thinking strategies. Our clients include leading companies worldwide from a wide range of industries, commercial and service sectors. We offer their management teams support and advice on strategic and operational questions relating to Operational Efficiency, Lean Thinking and the and the adoption of Industry 4.0.

You will work in teams of consultants providing expertise in engineering, construction and manufacturing, helping clients to achieve new performance highs and meet their strategic objectives.

You will make an important contribution to the analysis, design, and implementation of Lean Construction, Six Sigma and Management approaches, developing tailor-made solutions and working closely with clients to ensure positive impact and sustainable results.

In addition to working directly with clients, you will also share your experience and insights with colleagues internationally, thereby expanding our knowledge and refining our approaches in the field of Lean Management.

Minimum Requirements

You will have experience of bringing a Lean culture to the Construction Industry; have experience of developing LEAN processes and a record of implementation. You should be an agent for change a Continuous Improvement Champion and have experience of takt planning on a construction site.

The candidate should be able to demonstrate how they have introduced flow, undertaking pull planning and have experience with the last planner system.​


Professional experience in all areas of Lean Construction, e.g., The Toyota Production System, Kaizen methods, TPM, JIT, SMED, Last Planner.


Professional experience in the introduction and implementation of Lean Construction concepts


Advanced graduate degree and excellent academic record required (e.g., MBA, MSc, PhD, LEAN Six Sigma Black Belt etc.)


Exceptional analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills


Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment


Strong record of leadership in an academic, professional, or extracurricular setting


Mobile and excited to take on longer international assignments


Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing, in English and the local office language(s) a working knowledge of Spanish would be essential as there is collaboration with our Spanish office in Madrid.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate must come from the Manufacturing Industry as a Lean Engineer and have the following skills, qualifications and experience:


Hold an Post Graduate Qualification such as MSc, MEng.


Certified LEAN Six Sigma Black Belt or potential to work to


Experience of change management and improving the lean culture of a business


Experience of delivering training in LEAN and Continuous Improvement


Must be able to demonstrate a hands on approach to LEAN on a construction site
