Hardware Engineer (Safety)
Would you like to play a key role in the development of a unique hardware product which supports the Royal Navy? We currently have a vacancy for a Hardware Engineer who will focus on product safety & design certification, this role will be based at our site in New Malden.
As a Hardware Engineer you will be undertaking a defined range of hardware engineering activities relevant to the development of naval command, control and combat system equipment in line with all relevant processes and quality requirements under the direction of the Hardware Engineering team leader. This role plays a key part in hardware related test & acceptance activities and will be responsible to produce technical file documentation so previous experience of this is key.
This role will provide you with the opportunity to work on diverse projects where you will be supporting the development of the latest Navy platforms that use cutting edge technology.

We provide a range of combat system products and services that support ships throughout their lives, working with our customers to ensure they can respond to ever-evolving maritime threats
Your main responsibilities as a Hardware Engineer will involve:
Develop design specifications; and carry out design and development activities in line with specifications and all quality & technical standards with minimal guidance
Carry out technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of technical options, and prepare reports with suggested recommendations to support the design of improvements.
Take a central role in hardware related test & acceptance activities; and produce technical file documentation for products in order to provide evidence of conformity with the relevant legislation and in support of Product Safety & Design Certification activities as required.
Produce specifications for components/assemblies/sub-systems within their area of responsibility and placed on a procurement sub-contract; and provide technical support during the procurement lifecycle
Liaise with customers and/or suppliers in assigned areas on engineering matters.
Support build, assembly and installation of equipment to authorised design & installation specifications
Your skills and qualifications:
Essential
In-depth working knowledge of Product Safety & a good understanding of the principles of Design Certification
Have a good working and demonstrable knowledge of safety standards applicable to Information and Communication Technology equipment or similar
Experience of equipment design and development: making extensive use of available COTS technologies including embedded processing, server and networking technology; and industry standard and bespoke interfaces
Extensive experience in the development of mains powered equipment
Experience with COTS enclosures, cabinet design, wiring schedules, power distribution etc.
Good knowledge/experience working across the whole development lifecycle for physical equipment
Degree/HNC/HND qualified or equivalent experience in relevant field
Desirable
Knowledge of combat system equipment architecture or similar Naval combat systems
Either an incorporated/chartered engineer or willing to work towards
Appreciation/understanding of EMC and compliance testing
Appreciation of environmental compliance testing
