Job Summary
Serves as a fully capable professional who will be part of a larger team within the operating unit and is ultimately responsible for aspects from the feasibility to the technical delivery of various scale projects. The principal architect will also occasionally assist with bids and support the senior management team in the progressive evolution of AECOM’s design philosophy, research activities and technical development.
We are seeking an Architect with general practice background and a strong record with the MOJ, including HMP, NPS and IRC locations. The role will be based preferably in our Manchester office but others will be considered, and will require travel within UK+I. The candidate must be strong in technical knowledge on prison design and in design management, and design workflow. He/she will be expected to manage design activities and produce design information.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and management of the architectural scope of a variety of multidisciplinary projects.
Project/Design Responsibilities
*
Contribute, from the onset of a project, to the design of innovative and progressive design solutions that reconcile client’s goals and priorities while fostering opportunities for design excellence
*
To perform and/or direct material and building system research and participate in the co-ordination and preparation of project specifications
*
Ensuring Safety in Design principles are applied throughout all design stages of a project
Managerial Responsibilities
*
Organises own work to achieve set deadlines
*
Ensures, directly and through subordinates, that projects are completed on time and meet all requirements of the Design Brief
*
Responsible for the correctness, accuracy and complete coordination of the design documentation prepared by the assigned team
*
Ensures the quality of technical work produced by team meets AECOM’s Technical Excellence standards
*
Applies advanced knowledge and experience to manage the day-to-day work of practice teams
*
Routinely interacts with contractors and others using skills of persuasion and negotiation to resolve critical issues
*
Responsible for key design input at early design phases and for general design leadership during the course of the project
*
Promotes teamwork and instilling a creative culture within the practice
*
Make appropriate value judgements with respect to corrective work that supports the design concept and performance goals of the project
*
Support Directors with Excellence initiatives, management of resources (HR), training initiatives (CPD)
*
Support and develop junior staff through guidance, mentoring and leadership of their development
*
Ensures the latest software / techniques are utilised to increase productivity and training opportunities for staff are made available
Commercial Responsibilities
*
Understands and work within project budgets which includes fees and designing to budget
*
Assist in initial assessment of potential new projects and competitions
*
Contribute to preparation of bids
*
Build a network of professional relationships with existing and prospective clients
*
Actively participate in marketing and business development
Minimum Requirements
RIBA Part 3 and experience in Prison projects
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a multi-disciplinary consultancy
