What is the purpose of the role?
We are seeking a motivated people-manager to lead & develop a team of 6 multi-skilled technicians & operators who are responsible for the maintenance & compliance of the renowned Tideway Tunnel pumping station that connects the Lee Tunnel & Thames Tideway Tunnel. This high-profile site has the huge responsibility of coping with the flow from 2 enormous engineering projects. In order to cope with the increasing pressure on our current sewerage system and to protect the River Thames & River Lee, the £678m Lee Tunnel was built (completed in 2016) and the 25km long, 65metre deep Thames Tideway Tunnel was designed (completion in 2020).
What makes this role unique?
This truly unique role will provide you with an opportunity to manage the largest pumping station and auxiliaries in the country. Not only this, but you will work very closely with Europe's largest sewage treatment works, Beckton, as this is where the pumping station discharges into. You will be responsible for the team's health & safety, training & development, financial control and overall performance. You will be part of some amazing technological advances and witness the engineering history unfolding.
What will this role involve?
You will drive your team's personal performance and improve the overall engagement, whilst managing in line with HR policies & process.
Increasing customer service and operational performance within strict quality targets is key to the success of this role and will be achieved in line with a strong health & safety focus.
Day to day activities will include managing an operational budget, ensuring statutory planned & reactive maintenance is carried out, assure the effluent discharge compliance is maintained through effective performance management of our site and staff.
Ensuring site compliances and that the site achieves & maintains its required plant availability and reliability in order to meet quality targets at the agreed cost.
Owning and managing the budgetary and financial activities of the team and driving efficiencies into the overall operational budget.
Ensuring the team achieve optimal performance in terms of work management and you will be responsible for developing the team & introducing new skills & health & safety awareness.
Ensuring an exceptional service to our customers with early personal interventions as required.
Effectively lead the health and safety culture of the team as well as auditing the health and safety system & processes.
Continually improve the performance, standards and capability of the team to meet today's needs and develop for tomorrow.
What are we looking for?
Do you have previous experience managing operational staff? Are you focused on continuous improvement? We are seeking an experienced people-manager with a proven track record of engaging & developing their team. You will be used to taking the lead and achieving results in a difficult environment, with a strong focus on and good working knowledge of health and safety. You will have experience managing the operational budget with a structured and proactive approach. Your technical knowledge of electrical and mechanical principals will be underpinned by a background in wastewater however, this is not essential. You will need to be competent in using IT equipment / systems and be able to interpret complex Excel spreadsheets.
