Purpose of The Job
To drive, operate and maintain “on track” machines in a safe manner, in accordance with the Competency Based Standards for Operator Driver Maintainers, and in accordance with the Colas Rail Railway Safety Case

Principal Accountabilities
Responsible for booking on and off duty at the time and place directed by duty manager or senior production manager
Report fit for duty (physically, emotionally and mentally)
Wear personal protective clothing (P.P.C.) as supplied
Maintain clear and open communications, verbal and written, with Rugby Rail Plant Control Room (Help Desk)
Work to a safe and competent standard
Responsible for absorbing and retaining knowledge of traction, routes, rules and regulations, and operating notices
Carry out emergency procedures as and when required
Obtain any relevant late notice information from the Rail Plant Control Room (Help Desk) at Rugby at the beginning of each shift
Maintain and update publications as required for machines and route knowledge also for the safe running of machines and trains; (Sectional Appendix, Rule Book etc)
Undertake any other duties as directed by the Shift Manager, Regional Operations Manager or Line Management
Driving
Sign, be in possession of, and read all notices and publications effecting Operator Driver Maintainer route knowledge;
Responsible for unsupervised safe movement of machines and in accordance to rules and regulations;
Able to act and adjust driving techniques accordingly to suit prevailing conditions, e.g. weather and rail conditions;
Be vigilant in observing all signals applicable to train and machine movements and immediately report any irregularities to the signalman concerned;
Seek explanation from the signalman when there is a delay and establish reason(s) for the delay. Communicate this information to relevant the people;
Responsible for reporting to Network Rail in the most expeditious manner, normally via the signalman, any safety of the line incident so that action may be taken and protection may be put into place;
Responsible for personal route learning and refreshing;
Responsible for reminding management of the need to perform personal driving assessment once a year;
Responsible for reminding management of the need to perform personal rules and regulation certification every two years;
Operating
Conduct all pre-start safety checks using appropriate daily and weekly check lists;
Communicate with customer;
Respond to, and if possible, fix service faults and failures;
When Operator Driver Maintainer cannot personally fix machine, then he is responsible to help and assist “Fitter” to repair and fix the machine
Report all service faults and failures immediately both in writing and verbally to the Rugby Rail Plant Control Desk (Help Desk)
Operate “on tack machines” (OTM) in accordance with Railway Standards
Possessions to the instructions of the customer's machine controller / Track Quality Supervisor (TQS) and Controller Of Site Safety (COSS)
Report mileage and point numbers completed against planned output
Begin filling out the Plant Utilisation report and send it off to Rugby at the end of week
Use spill kits to reduce the environmental effect of any oil spills and report any spills to the Rugby Rail Plant Control Desk
Shut down machine safely
Carry out daily and weekly maintenance and safety checks and assist Fitter staff when fixing a machine breakdown or problem
Carry out certain aspects of the monthly maintenance as specified in the maintenance schedule.
Maintaining
Assist Fitter staff carry out monthly maintenance
Responsible for the immediate verbal reporting of machine faults and failures to Rugby Rail Plant Control Desk (Help Desk) and in writing by recording them in the Machine Fault Log Book
To complete all maintaining duties that do not qualify under the Maintenance (fitter) Assessment Scheme.
Decision Making Authority
Delegate authority in accordance with Colas Rail procedures.

Period reports on production as requested by Head of Plant Operations
Ad Hoc reporting as required

Experience and Qualifications

Knowledge of standards and specifications (for Operating, Driving and Maintenance)
