STFC - ISIS - Nuclear Analysis Industrial Placement

ISIS is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford in the United Kingdom. Our suite of neutron and muon instruments gives unique insights into the properties of materials on the atomic scale. We support a national and international community of more than 3000 scientists for research into subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, health care, through to nanotechnology and materials engineering, and on to fundamental studies of materials. The neutronics group is responsible for the state of the art nuclear analysis used to design and optimize the target, reflector and moderator assemblies which sit at the very centre of ISIS. The main focus of the neutronics group is large scale simulation of the facility but we also have an increasing experimental program to gather data to support future facility designs.
The nuclear analysis industrial placement student will work closely with a team of nuclear analysis experts to develop and test simulation codes, tools and nuclear data. This could be testing how a new radiation transport code scales on large scale high performance computers, using data science programming techniques to automate analysis and 3D visualisation of results or analysing experimental data on new moderator materials. The student will also help perform experiments at the ISIS facility to help benchmark code performance.
Examples of past industrial placement student projects include analysis of gamma ray spectroscopy results, simulation and benchmark experiments for an ISIS instrument beamline, and implementation of a moderator performance monitoring tool.

Criteria will be assessed at Shortlisting (S), Interview (I) or both (S&I)
* At university, enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and required or have requested to take a year out of studies to gain experience within industry (S)
* Right to live and work in the UK (S)
* Studying a STEM subject (S)
* Experience of computer programming such as python, C or Fortran (S&I)
* Competent and confident using mathematics to solve problems (S&I)
* Knowledge of data analysis techniques (S&I)
* Good oral and written communication skills (S&I)
* Basic knowledge of nuclear physics (S&I)
* Basic research skills i.e. use of journals, log books and research papers (S&I).
* Knowledge of radiation protection and safety (S&I)
* Knowledge of radiation detectors (S&I)
* Knowledge of Monte Carlo methods (S&I)
* Knowledge of high performance computing (S&I)
* Research experience as part of a larger project (S&I).

To be eligible you must be studying a recognised degree that requires you to undertake an Industrial Placement or have permission from your University to take a year out of your studies to undertake a placement. You must also have the right to work in the UK.
