Our engineers develop bespoke solutions in conjunction with world leading scientists, we then carry that idea through to completion.

The Project Engineering Group at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) near Oxford presently has a broad range of challenging projects working with the Diamond Light Source, ISIS, CERN, Central Laser Facility, and RAL Space. In joining us you will be working on the science experiments that will be making the ground breaking discoveries of the next 10 or 20 years. Some of our highest profile successes of recent years include: designing and building the principal optic suspensions for the LIGO project which has recently made the first direct measurement of gravitational waves; building the cooling system for the Planck satellite which measured the cosmic microwave background; and developing the detectors at the heart of the ATLAS and CMS experiments that were instrumental in discovering the Higgs Boson in 2012.

We are looking for engineers to work in the project management, design, manufacture, procurement, assembly, installation, integration, and commissioning of complex mechanical systems in support of projects. We require an experienced Mechanical Project Engineer, to make an immediate impact, complementing the existing team. This role will require you to work closely with in-house and external engineers and scientists to understand their requirements and transform their ideas into engineered solutions.

We offer 30 days leave a year, plus 10.5 public and privilege holidays, we operate a flexi time system, and you will be enrolled in the JSS pension scheme which is a 'by-analogy' scheme to the Principal Civil Service Pension Scheme (PCSPS). To join us you will have a strong background in Mechanical Engineering, and have experience of working as a design or analysis engineer, of managing resources, presenting ideas to customers and be skilled in the writing of technical papers and reports.

A degree in mechanical engineering (or equivalent qualifications or experience), and experience in the specification and procurement of engineering systems is essential.

You will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

* Produce creative and innovative designs solutions and concepts through the use of 2D and 3D CAD systems
* Manage projects through their complete life cycle by producing and monitoring project and resource plans, and associated budgets
* Organise technical meetings/reviews and maintain associated documentation to meet the requirements of the group’s Quality Management System
* Produce or supervise the use of FEA analyses/calculations to validate designs
* Take a pro-active, self-motivated, leading role in the delivery of projects
* Generate models, drawings and specifications to enable manufacture/procurement of parts and assemblies
* Contribute to all projects at all phases of their lifecycle, working the design from concept through to final design, manufacture, assembly, commissioning and handover
* Liaise with customers and staff at all levels including engineers, scientists and technicians
* Experience in the use of Thermal and Mechanical FEA to verify and optimise project work is useful but not essential to the role.

* Educated to degree level in mechanical engineering or HNC/HND with extensive experience in related fields
* Experience in the specification and procurement of engineering systems, including, but not limited to an in-depth knowledge of CAD

* Experience of mechanical manufacturing and fabrication techniques, including material selection and processes for design solutions
* Experience of writing technical papers, engineering specifications and progress reports
* Experience of managing resources.

* Experience of risk analysis
* Experience of working within ISO 9001:2015
* Experience in any of these fields:
* Vacuum technology
* Heat transfer analysis and cooling solutions
* Mechanism design
* Motion control systems
* Compressed air systems
* Pressurised systems
* Magnet technology
* Survey and alignment techniques
* Laser technology.

Interview Criteria


* Proven track record of project management techniques and delivery of medium sized projects
* Ability to provide creative ideas and cost effective solutions to challenging design problems
* Good working knowledge of a 3D CAD package
* Good working knowledge of engineering construction drawings
* Experience in the specification and procurement of engineering systems
* Experience of managing resources
* Experience of presenting ideas and solutions to customers and senior staff of external organisations
* Experience of manufacturing techniques
* Experience in the selection of materials and processes for design solutions
* Experience of writing technical papers, engineering specifications and progress reports.
