The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe's largest multi-disciplinary research organisations. ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is based at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire and is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. It is owned and operated by the STFC.
Through the use of a proton accelerator and a high power target facility, ISIS Neutron and Muon Source produces beams of neutrons and muons that allow scientists to study materials at the atomic level using a suite of instruments, often described as 'super-microscopes'. It supports a national and international community of more than 2000 scientists who use neutrons and muons for research in physics, chemistry, materials science, geology, engineering and biology.

About the role
As a mechanical engineer within the ISIS Accelerator Design Group, you will be working closely with fellow engineers and scientists to specify, design, develop and procure bespoke mechanical and electrical equipment for the particle accelerator.
Your duties will include
You will be involved in full lifecycle engineering from concept to commissioning of one-off components and larger, complex systems. This will include mechanical engineer calculations and analysis, precision tolerancing and alignment, design for manufacturing, design of RF cavities and accelerating structures, design of AC or DC electromagnets and design of ultra-high vacuum assemblies. You'll be responsible for project management (including scheduling, budgets, planning and reporting) and will coordinate the activities of various different technical disciplines to achieve the required end goal. You will produce mechanical designs and detailed drawings using 2D and 3D CAD, either as an individual or by managing the work of others.
Further duties will include:
* Presentation of designs for peer and stakeholder review
* Managing both internal staff and external contract design and detailing effort
* Managing tendering, procurement and delivery of approved designs
* Ensuring all engineering design and installation work is carried out safely and in accordance with STFC codes of practice
* As part of a design team you'll be collaborating, negotiating and working within the team. You'll make use of proven people management skills and will show an enthusiastic approach to work and achievement of goals. You'll utilise an organised approach to problem solving in order to deliver working and high quality solutions.

Shortlisting and Interview Criteria
Criteria will be assessed through shortlisting (S), at interview (I) or both (S&I)
* Degree/HND or above, or equivalent experience (S)
* Quality of cover letter - written communication and relevance (S)
* Knowledge of fundamental mechanical engineering principles, e.g. materials, stress/strain, fluid mechanics, heat transfer (S&I)
* In-depth knowledge in one or more of: RF cavities, magnetic elements (AC or DC), high vacuum engineering, precision alignment, materials engineering (S&I)
* Experience in a mechanical design environment: developing, designing, procuring, testing and reporting on the development of technically challenging engineering equipment (S&I)
* Experience in managing projects and the staff involved (S&I)
* Experience in performing engineering calculations and simulations (S&I)
* Excellent communication skills, particularly within collaborating, negotiating, networking and team building. (I)
* MEng in relevant engineering disciplines (S)
* Degree is IMechE/IET Accredited for CEng. (S)
