Job description/Person specification

Our Engineering Support Team based at the BUTEC Shore Support Base, Kyle of Lochalsh requires a Mechanical Engineer. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing and carrying out repairs, maintenance and minor modifications to all trials related mechanical equipment including compressors, IC engines, lifting equipment, marine equipment and tracking range support equipment at Kyle and two remote sites. You may also be required to operate the Remotely Operated Vehicle at sea as part of the ROV team

You will be responsible to the Engineering Manager and working as part of the Shore Support base.

You will be working to defined quality standards in implementing planned maintenance schedules, defect repairs, equipment modifications plus the procurement and commissioning of new equipment. Coordination of work carried out by other BUTEC & Rona departments and contractors will also be necessary.

Sea going activities may also be involved plus occasional travel to other QinetiQ sites.

Specific Responsibilities:

• Overseeing and carrying out repairs, maintenance and modifications to all trials related mechanical equipment.
• Procurement and commissioning of new equipment.
• Implementing planned maintenance schedules, defect repairs and equipment modifications.
• Maintenance and operation of the Remotely Operated vehicle.

Knowledge, Skills and Personal Qualities Required:

• Experience in an engineering environment.
• Awareness of health, safety and environmental legislation.
• Well organised, able to work individually or as a team player with excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work at sea and in confined spaces.
• Willing to fly via helicopter multiple times per month.

Challenges:

• Remote highland area with limited accommodation.
• Effective communication with technical/engineering departments both locally and at remote sites.
• Meeting ongoing monthly deadlines.

Key Accountabilities:

• Supporting the Engineering Manager in delivering a high quality service.
• Maintaining effective communication with other technical/engineering departments locally and at remote sites.

Behavioural Requirements:

• Good timekeeping.
• Able to work effectively especially under time pressure.
• Able to interact appropriately with other staff and departments.

Essential Qualifications:

• HNC in a relevant engineering discipline.
