Carrying out planned and reactive maintenance duties, to sustain and improve heating, ventilation and air-conditioning services to support STFC’s world-class scientific programme.

You will be responsible for undertaking the efficient and effective day-to-day execution of maintenance activities relating to theme chanical HVAC services and assets at 3 STFC sites - RAL, Chilbolton Observatory and The Cosener’s House. The role reports to the Mechanical Services Manager, undertaking maintenance to ensure the provision of safe and reliable mechanical services across the STFC estate, ensuring they meet or exceed relevant industry standards and comply with STFC’s SHE codes. Standards are maintained through an ongoing proactive programme of maintenance regimes (planned preventative/reactive/condition based) that the mechanical engineer is responsible for the continuous development and execution of - managed through aCAFM software package. The post also includes an active role in the installation of new/replacement mechanical services and systems across the estate.


* the operation and maintenance of the estates mechanical services (HVAC/DWS/compressed air and other piped services)
* to carry out works efficiently and effectively; acquiring and signing off work through the STFC designated CAFM package via a mobile device
* installation, operation, fault finding, repair, and maintenance of a wide range of mechanical building services and HVAC controls
* undertake an active role in site services condition surveys and where required, formal inspection, testing and verification of systems (additional training and qualifications maybe required)
* carry out legionella related maintenance tasks, including system flushing, temperature tests, water sampling and storage vessel inspections
* ensuring that all work carried out on STFC'S estate is completed in an effective and professional manner, and that all current safety and technical legislation is adhered to, including assess Risk Assessments and Method Statements (produced for in-house staff)
* safe systems of work (permits/isolation procedures/hot works/testing and re-commissioning)
* ensure that works are completed to a high standard and in a timely fashion, so as to reduce their impact upon scientific programmes
* accept training in future developments and technologies as required
* take on additional authorised person responsibilities as required (pressure systems/legionella control etc.)
* ability to be on call during silent hours (one week in five, as part of a planned rotation).

Shortlisting Criteria


* City & Guilds levels 2 & 3 (or an NVQ accredited equivalent) in a mechanical engineering discipline (HVAC/pipefitting/plumbing etc.)
* proven experience in the building services industry
* experience of fault finding in heating, ventilation and mechanical plant systems
* knowledge of safety legislation
* working knowledge of Microsoft Office.


* successfully completed a time-served trade apprenticeship
* BOAS boiler accreditation
* Fgas training
* asbestos awareness trained
* IPAF and PASMA trained.

Interview Criteria


* good working knowledge of HVAC and mechanical services engineering practices
* proven experience in the building services industry
* experience of fault finding in heating, ventilation and mechanical plant systems
* sound knowledge of piped distribution systems and operational theory
* knowledge of safety legislation
* ability to work in a methodical and structured way
* confidence in dealing with suppliers and service users
* excellent interpersonal skills
* conscientiousness and attention to detail
* self-motivated
* ability to work with minimal supervision.


* good understanding of H&S legislation
* basic knowledge of CAFM systems
* good knowledge of Document L8 and its practical application.
