B&V are seeking to strengthen their engineering team in response to an increasing project workload within their Consultancy, and Design and Build / Contracting teams. This includes work on projects with UK Water Companies, several major UK Contractors, the Environment Agency, and other players in the coastal, marine and asset management fields. There may also be opportunities to work on conventional or renewable energy projects, or on international water projects.
Depending on specific project needs, the Mechanical Engineer may be involved in any mechanical engineering aspects of delivering projects undertaken by B&V from inception to completion, in either a Consultancy or Contracting role. B&V’s current workload includes design and consultancy services within the Thames and Anglian Water regions, as well as UK and international Design and Build projects, predominantly in the Australia or S.E. Asia region.
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, with a flexible and dynamic approach. They will also need to be a team player with a pragmatic approach to problem solving and balancing the needs of a variety of project stakeholders with financial and time constraints. They will be expected to be prepared to deal with a range of project roles and project delivery methods, for example as a consultant providing specialist advice, or within an alliance arrangement with a Contracting partner working together to deliver a specific construction project.
Self-motivated candidates with a flexible approach to project type and location will have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of roles and take on increasing responsibilities and leadership based on their abilities. B&V has a structured career development policy which allows staff to progress to senior level via either a Technical Specialist or Project Management route.
The main duty of the mechanical engineer is to work within a project team under the mentorship of a more senior mechanical engineer to contribute to the successful delivery of any projects undertaken by B&V. Specific activities are likely to include ; Preparation of feasibility studies and outline designs; Evaluation and development of cost effective solutions to a range of mechanical engineering problems within specified timescales and budgets; Completion of calculations required in support of design, for example to allow correct selection of equipment capacities; Specifying equipment, suitable materials, and treatment processes etc. to meet specific technical and other project requirements; Generating detailed design outputs for construction; Provision of mechanical engineering design support to construction and commissioning / Contractor teams.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Continues to learn, remains current and develops ability to apply independent knowledge and interpretation to departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and B&V policies and procedures relative to assigned tasks.
Quality / Continuous Improvement:
Consistently and independently applies knowledge, and follows B&V quality procedures relative to assigned tasks. Contributes to continuous improvement and change management efforts.
Prepares a variety of engineering deliverables, involved in developing recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection. Completes complex engineering calculations under supervision, following standard methods and principles. Works to assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements. May be involved in any of the following: overseeing collection, assimilation, and management of data for engineering work; assisting the technical lead for a project.
Actively coordinates with all other internal/external team members on small – medium scope projects.
Involved with identification of key client interests and drivers on less complex projects, and strives to ensure client interests and concerns are accommodated in the performance of the work on less complex projects. May provide support to business development or pursuit activities.
Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology:
Encouraged to develop experience and knowledge as a technical specialist, gaining in-depth knowledge of an engineering process within their discipline.
Required competences: A track record showing competency / experience in some of the following activities, at feasibility, outline or detail design level would be preferable :
• Water & Wastewater treatment works
• Wastewater and water pumping stations
• Pipeline / Hydraulic design of treatment works, pumping stations and pipeline systems.
• Other infrastructure / utility projects of similar complexity.
Other desirable key skills include :
• Completion of mechanical calculations in support of process design / determination of equipment capacity.
• Development of mechanical datasheets, schedules and specifications.
• Development of site construction drawings and process P&ID diagrams.
• Knowledge and experience of H&S requirements.
• Input into project technical or progress reports.
• Appreciation of project budgetary and financial constraints.
• Good IT and communication skills.
Full time & Part time will be considered for this role.
HNC or HND Mechanical Engineering minimum qualification. Ideally CEng IMechE.
Ideally with previous consultancy or contractor background within water industry.
Broad range of mechanical equipment knowledge, design, specification and project implementation.
Ability to balance multiple tasks and achieve deadlines. Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Must be able to assist and produce well written reports and communicate effectively with team members, sub consultants, clients and other alliance partners.
