The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. A vacancy has arisen for a full time Mechanic / Coxswain at Skegness Lifeboat Station.

Our full time Mechanics / Coxswains contribute to the operational effectiveness of the lifeboat station through the operation, maintenance and repair of the lifeboats and their associated machinery and equipment.

You will need excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with volunteers at the lifeboat station, the supporters locally and RNLI staff beyond.

You will work closely alongside the existing full time station Mechanic, and play an important and active part in the training and assessment of volunteer crewmembers to the RNLI’s competence standards. Inspiring their motivation and progress, you’ll take them on seagoing exercises, identifying ways they can improve and imparting your valuable knowledge - so that when an emergency shout does occur, you, your crew and your lifeboat will be absolutely prepared.

To be considered, you’ll need:

- Extensive maritime experience and the ability to command lead a crew and safely operate/handle vessels up to 20 metres in length
- Experience of maintaining and operating high speed marine diesel engines and their ancillary systems
- Operational leadership skills
- Knowledge of SAR operations
- A good level of IT literacy, including knowledge of MS systems and associated software
- An RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Power) qualification or equivalent
- A marine and/or mechanical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent to NVQ level 3 standard

To keep flexibility with cover, ideally applicants should have Coxswain skills or have the aspiration and commitment to train in this area.

Ideally, you’ll have an RNLI COBT for ALB Coxswain and Command of the lifeboat operational pass out / RNLI COBT for ALB Mechanic and Command of machinery operational pass out, but this isn’t essential.

The closing date for applications is the 12th August 2018, with interviews scheduled to be held on the week commencing the 27th August 2018.

Our staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. We respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within our teams, and consider it essential to help us deliver a world-class lifesaving service. We are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, we also look for applicants who share our commitment to living our RNLI values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping us work towards our goals of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using our expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.
