The Opportunity

Are you looking for a legal career which is rewarding, at the cutting edge of project development and where you can really make a difference? Come and join our expanding New Nuclear Build Legal team and work on one of the most exciting, unique projects in the UK, whilst being at the forefront of the UK’s climate change agenda.

As a Legal Counsel – Construction, you will sit within our ‘HPC and Nuclear Development’ Legal team. The work of this team is critical to the success of the nuclear new build projects and to Britain’s net zero ambitions, with responsibilities which include:

* Construction: negotiating and supporting the management of a wide range of contracts required for the construction, operation and maintenance of new nuclear power stations, including advising on contracting strategies, commercial models, performance securities, insolvency risk and the management of disputes.

* Governance: managing complex governance arrangements across EDF’s new nuclear projects in the UK across shareholders and with UK Government.

* Intellectual Property Rights: understanding, overseeing and advising on complex IPR rights across different technologies.

* Regulatory and planning: supporting the businesses with regulatory compliance and development/compliance with planning requirements.

* Compliance: supporting the business in understanding regulatory compliance obligations and demonstrating best practice in all aspects including GDPR, export controls, health & safety and environment, nuclear licensing.

Day to Day

* The opportunity to work with one of the UKs largest award nominated in-house teams of construction lawyers, all of whom are highly experienced and skilled;

* Working on unique, first of a kind, high value and complex construction matters;

* Working with regional and large multi-national suppliers using recognised industry standard forms (FIDIC and NEC);

* Collaborating and working with many of the UK’s leading private practice construction lawyers who are part of our external adviser framework;

* Reviewing, drafting and participating in the negotiation of contracts, leading the negotiation process were appropriate;

* Participating in the management of contracts, dispute avoidance and dispute resolution processes including instructing counsel, legal panel firms and experts; and

* Working closely with clients within the NNB Projects to understand their objectives and business drivers and to identify current and future legal requirements.

EDF is the industry leader in low carbon generation and is the majority shareholder in the construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C (HPC) in Somerset. We are also in the development of a further proposed new nuclear power station at Sizewell C (SZC) in Suffolk.

These are major infrastructure projects with a critical role to play in the UK’s climate change ambitions and developing these projects will help the UK stay in control of its low-carbon future, create tens of thousands of employment opportunities and bring billions to the local economy.

The Skills

You will need:

* Relevant post qualification experience as a solicitor admitted in England and Wales or other commonwealth jurisdiction.

* Demonstrates well rounded legal knowledge, commercial acumen and experience preferably (though not necessarily) in the projects or construction sector.

* Able to use MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint to an intermediate level.
