About the role

We are looking for a Design Team Lead with interaction and visual design and ideation skills to help us lead and create products and interfaces that are compelling and easy to use. You will have a genuine appetite for complex information, experience in research, technical implementation and an energetic drive for design and visual communication.

Insights and data is what drives our team and you will use it to empower your decisions to support and improve the lives of customers, colleagues & suppliers. You’re no stranger to web technologies and using these for creating in-browser prototypes.

UI designers at Tesco are owners and guardians of our design language working together with our core design team, brand and other parts of our organization to help our users successfully use our products. We believe that all of our products should be functional & accessible. As a UI Design lead, you will work with multiple design teams and oversee development, execution and maturity of our design language. This will ensure our designs not only inspire, engage and excite them but is also empowers them to deliver impactful products in line with our Tesco enterprise design principles. You’ll rely on user-centered design principles to produce high-quality visuals—from concept to execution—across many platforms. Like all of our design jobs, you’ll collaborate with your fellow design leads to constantly refine the Tesco design language and create innovative, great-looking products that people love to use.

Our Enterprise design team works across a broad range of digital products, from colleague & supplier tools to other web-based products. Our goal is to deliver a delightful and focused user experience across all Tesco domains.

In this role, you'll drive art direction and consistency across these touch points, ensuring that we deliver an excellent user interface across surfaces and formats, working in close collaboration with design leads for a variety of individual products.

You will be responsible for

* Establish a solid UI practice and be accountable for the UI output of the enterprise team

* Provide guidance and mentoring to UI designers to help them achieve their best and drive consistent excellence across enterprise interfaces.

* Manage our Tesco Enterprise Design Language, and be responsible for its development, implementation through developing appropriate processes, systems which enable our design teams to not only use it but also contribute to its development.

* Support strategy for key projects through design direction, bring the vision to life and guide other teams to do the same

* Be ultimately responsible for implementation of our enterprise design language and outputs across multiple projects across Tesco Group. Review and provide feedback for artifacts generated by UI designs across enterprise

* Share design expertise and knowledge with others to improve organisational capability

* Together with our design teams you will work with developers to ensure our end products are in-line with the visions established that is inline with Tesco Enterprise design principles

* Be responsible for delivering consistent experience across Tesco while evolving our experience to meet ever changing business needs

* Delegate and be accountable for the outcome of appropriate tasks to junior members of the team who have been assigned to a project. Outline with the junior members what their goals, objectives, expectations, are for the project - prior to delegating tasks accordingly

* Work with junior members and product owners to set project timelines that include key milestones

* Solicit appropriate feedback at key milestones in the design process: investigate subjective feedback, handle inappropriate or untimely feedback

* Seek/Spot opportunities within the team to improve design process and therefore team synergy

* Be an evangelist for Enterprise UI Design best practice at Tesco both internally and externally

* As the role evolves you may be expected to line manage a small number of direct senior UI Design reports in key areas of the team

You will need

* Considerable experience as designer where you have established and developed design teams

* Expert-level knowledge in the fields of UI design, visual design, brand and designs systems

* Experience working with multifunctional teams to delivery complex design solutions across multiple platforms

* Experience conducting competitive analysis, and user testing sessions, then creating recommendations that drive design strategy accordingly

* Experience with data-driven design and usage data analysis.

* Portfolio with examples of relevant work

* Experience managing and leading high-performing, multi-disciplinary teams
