This is an exciting opportunity for a Lead System Engineer, working in the GE Monitoring & Diagnostics (M&D) business, within Grid Automation (GA). The M&D product line is a class leading vendor of sensing devices and systems to Electrical Utilities and Industrial customers. The product line spans sensing of multiple asset types and has a broad portfolio of advanced technology, which aid customers to understand and optimize the operating condition of key assets such as HV/MV power transformers and circuit breakers.

This role will be focused on system design and engineering on M&D Grid monitoring products, including Dissolved Gas Analysis systems and Bushing monitoring, working on enhancements to existing products and on new product developments and features.

Your experience of systems engineering and a strong background in electronics will help you to define and develop technical solutions and design strategies to refine existing products. Working on innovative electromechanical systems, you will apply best practices to provide system-level documentation and to lead system performance improvements.

Although primarily dealing with system design at product and PCB level, your input will also cover smart sensor design, electromechanical and mechanical designs. You will be required to analyse and summarise design data from multiple sources clearly and succinctly, in order to develop a robust product design and development strategy. In this role, you will be self-motivated, pro-active and demonstrate the ability to take ownership of problems and resolve them.

As part of a diverse engineering team, you will also provide guidance and support to the wider multi-disciplinary teams and functions.

Essential Responsibilities :

* Lead the development, design, and optimization of the electronic and electromechanical systems with the DGA product family.
* Perform in depth analysis and documentation of the current product systems and sub systems to PCBA level, utilizing the latest trends in the utility sector to develop leading and future-proofed systems.
* Apply system engineering best-practice to ongoing management of system- and sub-system- designs and requirements.
* Create technical documentation, i.e. concept documents, system functional and design specifications, technical specifications, and test plan/reports for all designs.
* Create designs using schematic capture and layout software.
* Create testing / validation documentation methodology for design verification.
* Support NPI through full lifecycle of the products.
* Carry out additional duties as requested by the Engineering manager.

Requirements

* Degree in Electronic/Electrical Engineering or relevant engineering discipline.
* Demonstrated experience of systems engineering in a relevant industrial/manufacturing setting.
* An excellent understanding and experience of the systems development lifecycle throughout the complete V-model for sub-system development.
* Demonstrated experience of systems design and development for electronic/ electromechanical systems, working with hardware, firmware and software design requirements.
* Experience with basic electronics tools & diagnostics / problem solving : oscilloscope, data logger, power supplies, active loads.
* Experience writing and using software tools for test and development, in environments such as National Instruments LabView/Python/Arduino, MATLAB/Simulink and preferably C/C++.
* The ability to communicate with stakeholders clearly and concisely on technical matters.
* Strong influencing skills and stakeholder management.
* Must be organized and have methodical approach to problem solving.
* Strong oral and written communication skills.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* The curiosity and enthusiasm to keep up-to-date with latest engineering techniques and products.
* Ability to think outside of the box to implement innovative and effective engineering solutions.

Desirable Characteristics

* Proven designs of highly sensitive scientific equipment.
* Knowledge of EMC/EMI and mitigation through design.
* Mathematical modelling and simulation experience using software such as PSPICE, MATLAB, or other relevant program environments.
* Design of hardware systems utilizing embedded processors, DSPs, memory devices, OPAMPs, A/D and D/A converters, as well as other peripheral devices such as RS232, RS485, ModBus, USB interfaces, Ethernet and I2C interfaces as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
* Designed PCBs utilizing techniques to prevent EMC and EMI.
* Ability to produce electronic designs using CAD tools: Altium or similar.
* Working knowledge of current Utility technology trends, IoT, Smart Grid etc.
