Johnson Matthey are actively seeking a Lead Software Engineer (Java) to be based in our Royston, Hertfordshire office on a permanent basis.

Johnson Matthey IT (JM IT) is Johnson Matthey’s global IT function responsible for ensuring that our IT capabilities are not only able to support and integrate technologies but can also offer insight into future IT tools that could provide us with a competitive edge and improved operating efficiencies.

We are currently in the process of a global IT transformation with several large programmes running and about to start.

The main purpose of the Lead Software Engineer (Java) is to provide leadership for the development and configuration of Java and open source based applications. To ensure all work is thoroughly tested, so that JMIT has confidence it has met the criteria given and is robust enough that we can modify/extend it without breaking existing functionality and ensure that the team is managed on a day to day basis. Candidates will be able to provide support and mentoring for the team.

With the acceleration of many digital projects, this role will be involved in one or more of the following over the next quarter;

*

Delivering a Customer Experience Platform, that will incorporate many of our customer facing websites.

*

Developing our metal trading customer portal for multiple geographies

* Securing and improving existing applications and web sites.

Key responsibilities:

*

Provide leadership to a team of developers: coordinating resources, mentoring the team and being a point of escalation for development issues.

*

As part of an agile team, the lead developer will work closely with members within JMIT to understand requirements, demonstrate solutions and understand feedback.

*

Be the subject matter expert for the programming code for an application or group of applications.

*

Ensure that the workable programming code, developed by the team, meets the requirements specification.

*

Strive to continually improve code quality and processes, to deliver high quality software for the business.

*

Review design documentation and programming code of other developers.

*

Significantly contribute to the review and creation of technical designs. For example: to facilitate the delivery of change requests.

*

Ensure that all changes delivered by the team are tested appropriately, in line with JM standards.

*

Ensure the development of applications/services to design specifications is in line with architecture technical standards.

*

Ensure that documentation is maintained and kept up to date in line with JM standards and policies.

*

Ensure that knowledge is shared with colleagues through formal documentation and communications sessions.

* As a member of the global JMIT community you will be a champion of the function’s values and culture, while demonstrating and openly encouraging the behaviours expected from a professional, best in-class IT team.

Background and experience needed:

*

Proficient in Java, with a good knowledge of its ecosystems (e.g. Java Enterprise Edition, JPA Hibernate/EclipseLink)

*

Solid understanding of object-oriented programming

*

Familiar with various Java based design and architectural patterns

*

Experience of building cloud applications, either on AWS or Azure.

*

Experience in writing reusable Java libraries

*

Knowledge of concurrency patterns in Java

*

Familiarity with concepts of MVC, relational database design and management, interfaces (e.g. RESTful, SOAP) and web application development (including web security).

*

Experience of working in a structured development environment, using frameworks for designing (e.g UML), building software (e.g Maven, ANT), configuration management (e.g GIT, SVN), testing (e.g Mockito, Junit, Selenium) and hosting enterprise solutions (e.g Tomcat, JBoss, Wildfly)

*

Knowledge of SDLC processes and development methodologies e.g.; Agile (Scrum, Kanban)

*

Experience using various development tools such as; Eclipse IDE, Continuous integration environments (Jenkins, TeamCity), OWASP, JIRA /JIRA Agile

*

Team leadership experience

* Awareness of the latest technologies/frameworks
