What is the purpose of this role?

Our Milton Keynes Waste Recovery Park brings together state-of-the-art mechanical treatment and heat energy recovery technologies to make the most of Milton Keynes’ black sack waste rubbish in a sustainable way.

As a Lab Technician you will perform skilled work in the quantitative analysis of water, wastewater, waste solids, waste composition and other processes. Complie with regulatory and safety requirements on the operation of laboratories and ensure all testing and calibration activities meet the principles of ISO 17025.

What will this role involve?

Performs chemical, bacteriological, and physical testing on a wide variety of samples including wastewater, sludge, waste solids, surface water discharge and any other testing as maybe required.
• Completes parallel measurements on the Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMs) as part of Quality Assurance Standards BS EN 14181.
• Ensure sampling of Syn gas is taken and dispatched for analyse, maintain records of results.
• Regularly tests and monitors the residue from the Air Pollution Control System as well Incinerator Bottom Ash and arrange for samples to be sent to third party laboratories for testing and maintain records.
• Calibrates laboratory equipment, performs quality control checks, analyses performance evaluation samples.
• Manage consignments of hazardous waste in accordance with Duty of Care
• Maintains records of all monitoring requirements including records of the taking and analysis of samples, instrumental measurements, calibrations, examinations, test and surveys and any assessment or evaluation made on the basis of such data. Prepares laboratory reports for the Compliance Manager and regulators. Work involves the accurate management and assimilation of laboratory data, reporting results in specified format and notifying the Compliance Manager of any abnormal results.
• Complies with all COSHH regulations and maintains a record of all data sheets for chemicals and substances that could be hazardous to health used in the laboratory. Maintain COSHH register ensuring regular review and updating as required. Ensure all records are uploaded to SharePoint.
• To carry out daily site odour checks in line with the permit, ensure the accurate recording.
• Prepares laboratory equipment and media for analysis. Work involves the preparation of chemical and bacteriological media, reagents and test solutions used in a water/wastewater plant laboratory

What are we looking for?

Qualifications
• Degree in Chemistry or Microbiology or a closely related field
• Level 4 (NVQ) Certificate/Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities
• Ability to write technical reports and provide demonstrations
• Ability to maintain and calibrate technical equipment
• Good written and oral communication skills
• IT literate with a strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Packages in particular Excel and knowledge of Sharepoint would be an advantage.
• Excellent record keeping techniques

Experience
• Relevant experience in a laboratory analysing water or wastewater/solid samples or in a position equivalent to a Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator
• Experience in scientific fieldwork and laboratory safety practices and procedures
