Head of Software Engineering - Kaluza

Kaluza was born out of OVO Energy wanting to do things differently and an ambition to be market leading through the energy transition. When OVO was founded in 2009, all energy companies had the same technology strategy – buying off the shelf energy utility software. With a fast-evolving energy landscape, it is clear that the traditional approach to technology is no longer fit for purpose. Today’s energy retailers are grappling with the need to rapidly digitise and reap the rewards of modern technology across all areas of their businesses. In an increasingly connected and data-rich world, legacy operating systems are weighing – and slowing – retailers down, draining resources and hampering innovation for customers who are at the heart of the energy transition. While the electrification of heat and transport and the rise of the smart home are driving decarbonisation, suppliers are challenged with engaging customers in a more flexible and affordable energy system

From revolutionising billing to smart electric vehicle charging, Kaluza’s technology is empowering some of the biggest energy suppliers to better serve millions of customers. Its real-time cloud platforms transform supplier operations, reducing cost to serve, boosting customer engagement and enabling them to drive decarbonisation with smart, low carbon technologies.

Kaluza’s leading innovation is recognised across the industry, winning ‘Technological Innovation’ in edie’s Sustainability Leaders Awards 2020, ‘Transport Technology’ in BusinessGreen Technology Awards 2019 and ‘Best Innovation in Electricity’ at the UK Energy Innovation Awards 2019.

Kaluza’s Energy Retail Platform

As the world’s energy needs evolve, suppliers with legacy systems are struggling to stay on top of increasingly complex and changing data, at great expense. Kaluza demonstrates advanced automation to simplify previously unmanageable volumes of live customer and industry data. The SaaS platform intelligently learns from new data in real time and self-updates at scale, removing the need for manual maintenance. In doing so, Kaluza creates considerable cost savings for suppliers enabling them to instead invest in innovating for tomorrow’s customers and future-proofing their business for a zero-carbon world.

Where in the world of Kaluza will I be working?

You will be providing Engineering leadership for a collection of engineering teams within Kaluza. These teams provide data products that enable customer-facing digital experiences for client retailers. As well you will leverage other parts of the platform for industry interaction and agent tooling and allow our retail customers OVO Energy/SSE to realise Plan Zero by giving them an advanced and efficient platform. With ownership of the overall strategy (teams, people, products) for the area you will be leading.

What will I be doing?

* Providing technical leadership and line management of engineering teams between primarily London and Bristol

* Working with heads of product and design, along with stakeholders to develop shared target outcomes and ensuring the technology team is set up to achieve these outcomes.

* Managing and developing Software Engineering Managers and Principal Engineers creating a small autonomous leadership team.

* Defining the technology strategy within your area and influencing the larger Kaluza platform vision.

* Building and promoting our technology brand, including being responsible for how we bring new talent to your technology teams.

* Continually working towards technical excellence and industry best practices.

* Building an excellent technology culture of highly autonomous, intrinsically motivated, well-aligned teams.

* Helping teams to make technical decisions that align with our business objectives and long term goals, including building positive relationships with the Product, Design and Commercial partners to your teams.

* Being ultimately responsible for technical decision making and budget.

* Building high performing teams and working with development managers to develop talent and build the succession plans of the next generation of thought leaders.

Is this the job for me?

Ideally you will have:

* A strong technology background, ideally in scalable distributed applications.

* Experience building, running and leading high performing, autonomous engineering teams (ideally at least 20 people).

* A fundamental understanding of the principles of Agile and lean development.

* An excellent understanding of a broad set of modern technologies across front end, back end and data platforms.

* Excellent communication skills and experience working with senior leaders across the business.

* Experience integrating technology into the wider business strategy.

* Experience working in a fast paced, high growth, technology focussed organisation.

* Proven experience of crafting a forward thinking technology culture.

From us you’ll get* * 4% of your salary to spend on flexible lifestyle benefits

* 5% matched employer contribution to your pension

* 25 days holiday + 1 for your birthday

* Flexible working hours

* And many more...

Please note that certain benefits kick-in once you have passed probation which can be up to 6 months after your start date.
