The Opportunity

Are you looking for a legal career which is rewarding and where you can really make a difference? Come and join our expanding HPC / SZC Legal team and work on one of the most exciting, unique projects in the UK, whilst being a part of the UK’s climate change agenda.

As a Head of Legal – Corporate and Regulatory, you will lead our ‘HPC and Nuclear Development’ Legal team and the work of your team is critical to the success of the nuclear new build projects, with responsibilities which include:

* Governance: managing complex governance arrangements across EDF’s joint venture new nuclear projects in the UK – working with shareholders and with UK Government.

* Intellectual Property Rights: understanding, overseeing and advising on complex intellectual property rights across the project and different reactor technologies.

* Planning and Regulatory consents: supporting the projects in preparing for, applying for and maintaining planning and regulatory consents.

* Financing and Investment: supporting the business in developing, implementing and managing the financing structures for the projects, including the associated governance requirements.

* Compliance: supporting the business in understanding regulatory compliance obligations and demonstrating best practice in all aspects including GDPR, export controls, health & safety and environment, nuclear licensing.

Day to Day

* Provide high quality, effective, pragmatic, solutions focussed legal advice to senior leaders on a broad range of strategic, complex and high value matters; including the management of Joint Venture arrangements, key commercial or construction contracts, arrangements with Government, general advice on other planning or regulatory matters, governance and compliance requirements and avoidance and/or management of any disputes.

* Take the lead in drafting or creating complex or strategic concepts to enable the delivery of the projects, as an enabler to business in the context of the business plan and governance needs.

* Lead a high performing team of lawyers, paralegals, trainees and/or interns, inspiring them to drive performance and business value. Responsible for line management including providing guidance and support, supporting personal development and setting objectives through the annual performance management process. Responsible for workload management and coordination with the General Counsel (and other Heads of Legal where relevant) for effective team management across the wider Legal team.

* Support the business in proactively identifying potential disputes or claims, anticipating and providing strategic advice to avoid such disputes or claims and successfully/efficiently managing formal disputes and in proactively implementing the flow through of project to project lessons learned as appropriate

* Be a senior point of reference within the business unit for senior leaders, ensuring that the General Counsel is kept up to date on key matters and challenges and building relations with senior stakeholders within the business unit and broader EDF business.

* Actively trend spot and be aware of key legislative and sector changes that may impact the business and share the same across the legal team, wider business unit and EDF Group Legal teams as appropriate, including through delivery of training courses. To engage with key internal and external stakeholders where appropriate. To influence and lead on the implementation of any change initiatives to ensure compliance.

EDF is the industry leader in low carbon generation and is the majority shareholder in the construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C (HPC) in Somerset. We are also in the development of a further proposed new nuclear power station at Sizewell C (SZC) in Suffolk.

These are major infrastructure projects with a critical role to play in the UK’s climate change agenda and energy policy and developing these projects will help the UK stay in control of its low-carbon future, create tens of thousands of employment opportunities and bring billions to the local economy.

* Commercially astute: Strong commercial acumen that can identify risk, risk mitigations and present suitable options to the business balancing risk and reward.

* Attention to detail: Able to demonstrate both attention to detail and the ability to provide highly pragmatic legal advice in the context of an established, commercial, operational business.

The Skills

You will need to:

* Have relevant post qualification experience as a solicitor or barrister admitted in England and Wales, or equivalent qualification.

* Experience of delivering a pro-active, business-focused service at a senior level that anticipates risks and prevents problems.

* Experience of successful line management, preferably of a team.

* Demonstrate well rounded legal knowledge and experience preferably (though not necessarily) in the projects sector and commercial acumen.

* Experience of delivering infrastructure projects, operating in a nuclear environment and a broad understanding of corporate risk areas would be beneficial.
