Job Description

We are looking for a Ground Systems Engineer to join Airbus Defence & Space in Portsmouth. You will join the Secure Communications engineering group and report to the Head of Systems Engineering and Architecture.

Airbus is developing the Skynet 6A military communications satellite, a follow on from the highly successful Skynet 5 series that the company owns and has operated on behalf of the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) since 2003.

The project involves development, manufacture, cyber protection, assembly, integration, test and launch of a military communications satellite planned for launch in 2025. This includes the essential ground control and management infrastructure.

You will assist with the development and maintenance of the overall Skynet 6A ground system design, working closely with the System Architect. You will be responsible for developing system solutions, deriving and maintaining lower level requirement specifications for lower level subsystems, then working with those subsystem teams to ensure the system need is addressed.

The job will naturally evolve into systems engineering the wider prospective ground infrastructure for Skynet 6 EC and related military communications systems prospects.

You will join a small team of experienced Systems Engineers and Analysts who are primarily focused on UK Military Satellite Communications Services and Systems. This team has been key to the successful delivery and operation of the Skynet 5 system and is now providing the technical and analytical leadership for Skynet 6A.

You will need to be eligible able to gain UK SC Security Clearance to undertake the role.

Tasks and Accountabilities



Working within the team and the wider programme community to assist with the adherence to systems engineering processes;



Supporting the overall systems engineering consistency of the resulting specifications, design, implementation and acceptance;



Supporting various initiatives to ensure good design solutions, methods and procedures are transferable, where possible, across the wider Airbus business;



Supporting the wider business by providing technical subject matter expertise to teams bidding for non UK MilSatCom prospects.



Be aware of potential compliance risks and a commit to act with integrity, as the foundation for the company's success, reputation and sustainable growth.

This role will be based in Portsmouth but may require travel to our operational sites in Hertfordshire and Wiltshire, UK MOD and government agency sites and potentially to our manufacturing and test facilities in Harwell and Toulouse.

Required Skills and Experience



Experience in a related systems engineering environment



Knowledge of Model Based Systems Engineering processes and tools
