JOB TITLE Geotechnical Technical Director

JOB DESCRIPTION

OVERVIEW

Rendel’s geotechnical team provides support to infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects covering transport
systems (roads, bridges & tunnels), airports, ports & maritime, rail systems, buildings and power. The position will
involve taking a leading technical role as part of the delivery team and include undertaking and checking the delivery of
the design solution and associated outputs for the project.

For the right candidate, the role offers an exciting opportunity to develop and grow the geotechnical business as well as
be involved in the broader business strategy and decision making.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 Undertake and lead assignments in the UK and overseas. Organise and manage technical staff, acting as a line
manager supporting recruitment, training, CPD and implementation of ‘Best Practice’ and procedures

 Assist in providing appropriate resources for the successful delivery of assignments in the UK and overseas, to
maximise fee income and resource utilisation

 Take an active role in the Company’s Graduate Development programme
 Provide technical leadership in design projects from inception to handover. Liaise with clients about technical

solutions in the delivery of geotechnical engineering to stakeholders (including technical and non-technical clients),
including the production of feasibility studies where required

 Ensure successful delivery of projects by working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary environment
 Assist in sourcing and developing business opportunities, securing business and developing client relationships

 Adopt procedures for standardisation of work products and deliverables, and peer review to ensure consistency and
excellence in service delivery of the Company’s technical work product

 Promote cross functional working linked to assignments and skill group activities
 Have an understanding and awareness of the company values and business plan and your contribution to both

 Implement and adhere to Company procedures in the management, delivery and administration of Services
 Observe and maintain Company Health and Safety Policy across all activities

PERSON SPECIFICATION

KEY EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

 Degree qualified in Civil Engineering with a Masters / post graduate qualification in a geotechnically related subject
 UK Chartered Civil Engineer
 Extensive knowledge of geotechnical and engineering geological processes and design, with a particular emphasis on


data interpretation, design & analysis, construction, and advanced numerical modelling
 Geotechnical design experience including foundations, deep excavations, retaining structures, earthworks, soil and

rock slope engineering, ground improvement, seismicity and liquefaction, and instrumentation and monitoring
 Ground investigation experience, including design, specification, procurement (including preparation of tender

documents and tender evaluation), fieldwork and laboratory supervision, and contract management
 Geomorphological and coastal experience would be beneficial
 A thorough understanding of the construction process and parties involved including principals of project and

programme management
 Strong knowledge of Eurocodes and other national and international industry standards, contracts, methodologies

and procedures
 Experience predominantly in large scale (c.£100m+), high profile infrastructure projects, for a range of Clients in

various construction market sectors
 Substantial experience as Assignment Director/Manager with a proven ability and record of managing risk, delivering

assignments to programme and budget and developing and maintaining relationships with key clients
 Experience of working and operating at a senior level and communicating and presenting to the client
 People management experience e.g. general employee welfare, appraisals, resourcing and recruitment activities

developments and the broader industry and enhance own professional persona in the industry

 Communication: Strong interpersonal skills; ability to communicate, listen and influence all levels of people
